Engaging but brief
Revisado: 08-07-24
I guess I wasn’t paying attention when I bought this short story, I don’t usually buy books that are more correctly called novellas, and find it annoying to spend a whole credit on a half of a book. It was OK, ended poorly with a cliffhanger, or more appropriately said it ended about halfway through if it was a whole book instead of being split up in short sections. I was starting to getting tired of the book and losing interest fast, then realized it was over. The dialog was very simplistic suitable for younger kids. There was not really much going on in the book until the last 15 minutes, then it was done. I wish audible would not charge whole credits for these short stories.

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal—including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.

Great book except….
Revisado: 03-05-24
I enjoyed the book, it was better than most of the mixed voice narration I have listened to. Sometimes Lira’s voice being so high and squeaky got on my nerves some, the rest were very good. The story was stellar, kept my attention throughout the book. I did have a problem with the author interview at the end though. The interview popped up right after the ending with no warning about the spoilers that gave away parts of the plots in the next books. This interview should have been tacked onto the last book not the first book, they immediately started talking about lira and a character I haven’t heard of yet. It is a disappointing error on the publishers part to ruin the next book before the reader has even started it.

Historia
Three months ago, the horrible news that the Dark Druids captured his beloved pet Gryphon sent thirteen-year-old Jake Everton reeling—especially since he knows he’s the one the warlock brotherhood really wants. It’s a trap, and poor Red is just the bait. Well aware of the threat, the Elders have forbidden the daring boy hero from taking any action to rescue his faithful companion. Instead, Jake and his friends must cool their heels at the Order’s palace headquarters, where they’ll be “safe.”

Another great book in the Gryphon Chronicles!
Revisado: 02-14-24
This is a fast paced book, full of adventure. I love how Jake’s group of friends ride through the ups and downs in this book as a team, they are all such differing personalities with differing talents and knowledge but very secure in their contribution to the overall group. There are many very interesting revelations in this novel all coming together to give us a hint of future happenings, in the next few books. The ending will be a surprised that will lead into the next book very well. This is not the first time I have listened to this audiobook, but the first time with this narrator. Jake Benson did an outstanding job with a huge list of characters both male and female and such a wonderful job with the shivery deep voice of the demon! He makes a great distinction between each character and does male and female voices equally well, and seems to project the age group of each character correctly. Can’t wait to start the next book in the series!
I was given this book free of charge to review, which in no way influences my honest opinion given in this review.

Historia
Whether debating bamboo versus graphite rods, describing the pleasure of fishing in pocket waters or during a spring snow in the mountains, or recounting a trip in pursuit of the "fascinatingly ugly" longnose gar, Gierach understands that fly-fishing is more than a sport. It's a way of life in which patience is (mostly) rewarded, the rhythms of the natural world are appreciated, and the search for the perfect rod or ideal stream is never ending.

Boring
Revisado: 01-29-24
The narrator has definitely made this book the most boring thing I have ever listened to in all my many years of Audible and Brilliance audiobooks. He is about a mono tone, and while there may have been funny moments the delivery just killed them. I am an avid fly fisher and fly tier and was looking forward to listening to this book, but the shear monotony of listening to it had me thinking of grocery lists instead of the story, and I don’t like shopping.

Slow
Revisado: 10-10-23
I am a little more than 5 hours into this book and so far it is totally uninteresting, if it was a book instead of audio I probably would have quit a long time ago. There is a slight hint that some magic went on with the aunts that basically allowed the kids to raise themselves, then hours of nothing, one dimensional characters, narrator that just seems to strain to produce the dialogue and has annoying clicks and slurps that are really noticeable when listening with a Bluetooth. I really should have given this one a miss, lost credit for nothing. I have read many Hoffman books and this one seems not to be in line with her usual excellent writing.

Slapstick at its worst
Revisado: 05-10-23
Besides the fact that you can’t listen to this with earphones because the background noise is drowning out the voices, the story line is ridiculous and ludicrous. Not recommended

Historia
Gloria French was a jolly widow with dyed blonde hair, a raucous laugh, and rosy cheeks. When she first moved from London to the charming Cotswold hills, she was heartily welcomed. She seemed a do-gooder par-excellence, raising funds for the church and caring for the elderly. But she had a nasty habit of borrowing things and not giving them back. They're just small things - a teapot here, a set of silverware there - so it's quite the shock when she is found dead, murdered with a poisoned bottle of elderberry wine.

Last Agatha Raisin book with Penelope Kieth
Revisado: 04-25-23
I can find a lot wrong with the main character in these books, she is not a likable character. The constant smoking and gripes about smoking in nonsmoking areas, the strange attraction to any male in her vicinity, the fact that she investigates for personal fame alone, the constant makeup fixes, the constant dieting, the poor eating habits, the fact that it is primarily her blundering that solves the cases, and the blundering is responsible for additional murders, the constant drinking all make for someone that I would not really want to know. It is funny to say it is a light read considering it usually involves several murders, but it is hard for me to consider it anything but a slapstick kind of listen. This book is the last one narrated by Penelope Kieth, so I will not be bothering with anymore in the series. I suffered through two books with a different narrator, and am not willing to waste my time with more considerations the sample narration the next books in the series. Changing the narrator is the death of a series for me.

Historia
Agatha has fallen head over heels in love - again. This time, she has her eye on the local gardener, George Marston, but so do other women in their little Cotswold village. Shamelessly determined, Agatha will do anything to get her man - including footing the bill for a charity ball just for the chance to dance with him. And then George doesn't even show up. Only partly deterred, Agatha goes looking for him, and finds his dead body in a compost heap. Murder is definitely afoot, but this killer chose no ordinary weapon: A poisonous snake delivered the fatal strike.

Narrator awful.
Revisado: 04-25-23
Changing narrator in the middle of a series is the death of the series for me. This narrator gives a complete different take on Agatha Raisin, she becomes a quiet one dimensional character, amazing how a narrator can ruin a book. In conversions I get lost because both characters have the same voice, even if it is a male female couple.

Could use a different narrator
Revisado: 04-06-23
The narrator ruins this book and makes this novel boring, she is nothing like the feisty detective that Kindsey is supposed to be, her voice in many passages is almost a monotone, and then there are the pauses. There will be a couple of run on sentences then that pause that last long enough for me to pull out my phone from my pocket and see why the book stopped. Her men’s voices are horrible, sometimes different than the last sentence, sometimes just like Kindsey’s voice.
It is a very dated, I think because it happens not that long ago but before everyone was running around with cell phones and a lot of time is spent on phone that it seems to be contrived, but that was what it was like. The novels further down the alphabet are better written, I have read all books years ago and thought I would like to listen to some. I think due to the bad narration and performance I will pass on all the ones this poor narrator does which has me missing A-N, but I just can’t listen to that monotone voice, particularly when interesting things are happening. I generally dislike abridged books, but may listen to them since that narrator is light years ahead in preforming then Mary. Sad such a poor performance totally ruins a book.

The narrator makes this a tough read
Revisado: 03-18-23
I have the rest of the series, but changing narrators is always tricky, and this one is a poor choice. Her people voices are not too bad but her narration ends every sentence in an uplift like they are all questions, in some sentences every word is pronounced with the last syllable uplift. It makes it very hard to listen to and detracts from the story so much that it is getting boring. I will make sure I never get a book from this narrator again. I think it could be a good story, although so far half way through it is slow, but reading it would be a better choice with the narrator chosen.
