Ali Cross is a bright, smart and curious young black man. His father is a renown detective who consults for both the metro PD and the FBI. Ali in this 3rd book of the series has the detective bug.

And this being his 3rd book has disobeyed his Black Police detective daddy numerous times. Before he can serve out one punishment he’s disobeyed his dad again. The last instance there is gunfire.

There is absolutely no way that this young man would continue to be able to do this in a black household. Nope it’s way too far fetched. However the stories are intriguing and the school debate had great thought behind it. I still think James can delve further into this subject. Still worth the read.

I love the Alex Cross series. I think James does and excellent job with the Alex Cross character. However, he missed several opportunities to have meaningful conversation about the police and African American men. 9/10 really 10/10 Black fathers have to have the conversation about how to act with police officers with their sons. Even being a police officer they know that unless the officer knows he the son of an officer, and even then it may not help. There are two many off duty black men who’ve encountered it to skip over
It the way James did. When his son asked the question, Alex responded with there are a few and the rest it’s training. No sir it
Is not. They don’t lack training they lack diversity in the people they know, interact with. We have seen time and time again white officers not kill white people. Serial killers even. So we know they are trained in deescalation and how to take a prisoner alive. They don’t live in the cities they police and they don’t have diversity in their friends and neighbors. There has been a concerted effort in this country to show black men and boys as threats, so
When they see them as such.

There’s such a bigger conversation and this book didn’t go far enough in having that conversation.

In addition when the question about why Alex was prosecuted, it didn’t go far enough (although the attorney did say something) about how quickly black officers are taken to trial as opposed to white officers when a death by police officer occurs.

This book could have been so much more. Too bad James wasn’t courageous enough or doesn’t believe it was a needed conversation.

I love the Alex Cross series. But i feel like this was just over the top with Alex being the only one that could solve all the crimes. In a 36 hour period he was in the mix on EVERYTHING. However I still love the relationships that he has with his family and friends and the dilemma that he is struggling with that I’m sure will show up down the line. It also makes the reader ask, what would you do in that situation with lives on the line. Especially reading it in 2023 and all the things that have been going on. Overall worth the read.

The budding romance with Bree is secondary to the suspense. As usual Sampson brings comic relief. As Alex straddles the fence with his practice and being pulled back into detective work you know where his heart really is. Kyle Craig makes an appearance and again you realize just how detailed his mind is and how sick he can be. Even behind that there is this respect for Alex that is undeniable. The twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat.

This book took me through all types of emotions. I laughed, I felt sad, I felt convicted. Although the story is of Black South Africans it could very well be the story of African Americans. They dynamic between races and classes is very similar. Born a Crime is a story you won’t regret listening to and you definitely won’t forget
