Wide variety of fascinating stories.

After reading so many wildlife/outdoors/hunting/survival books, Wild Men, Wild Alaska was a pleasant surprise! Great story telling, from an honest, humble, very relatable story-teller. Don’t miss this one.

Hugh Grant sounded like I think Charles Dickens would’ve sounded, had he narrated the book!

Hugh Grant was a super easy listen. He made even the tedious parts of the book (all books have them) fun.

Historia
It was the only water for miles in a vast, sun-blasted desert where water meant survival. So Logan Cates naturally headed for Papago Wells. But he wasn't the only one. Fleeing the fierce Churupati and his Apache warriors, other travelers had come there, too. And when the Apaches found them, they began a siege as relentless and unforgiving as the barren land - and just as inescapable.

Epic story telling, perfect ending.
Revisado: 11-13-24
Didn’t want it to end. Huge L’Amour fan but can’t say this about all of his books. This one will become one of your favorites. Narrator sounds like a cowboy but in an annoying way. (If you listen to a lot of western books you know what I mean). Solid 5 stars.

Historia
The summer of 1876 was a key time period in the development of the mythology of the Old West. Many individuals who are considered legends by modern listeners were involved in events that began their notoriety or turned out to be the most famous—or infamous—moments of their lives. Those individuals were Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Wild Bill Hickok, and Jesse James. The Summer of 1876 weaves together the timelines of the events that made these men legends.

Revisado: 04-26-24
I was astonished at every event detailed in this audiobook. I couldn’t believe that Red Cloud’s visit to DC, professional baseball becoming a League, the phonograph, the telephone (shown to Red Cloud at the Philadelphia World’s Fair) & Little Bighorn (Custer, and Crazyhorse), just to name a few, took place within about a year of each other!
I really enjoyed the cadence of this book. When any historical work involves intertwining multiple storylines, many authors, get too tangled up in the details and end up, losing the reader (listener), I travel for business and so start & stop a lot. No matter where I picked up, the narrator and author captured my attention immediately. If you enjoy history, western or otherwise , you won’t be able to stop listening.

If you love Old West History...
Revisado: 05-11-21
If you enjoy stories about old West history, particularly the Lawmen of that period, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. The Narrator had a different style than I am accustomed to that took a minute to get used to, but really did a fine job of emphasizing the important parts of the book and giving feeling & character to its subjects. I particularly enjoyed the thought process that went into many of their campaigns as well as the quick wit and courage that often got them out of near death situations. This book dovetails nicely with several of the historical books that I’ve read about the Comanche, Kiowa, Navajo and Apaches, such as “Empire of the Summer Moon” (Comanche) the Fighting Cheyenne’s and Blood and Thunder (Navajo). All these tribes had close dealings with the Texas Rangers and by there own accounts had a healthy respect for this fledgling but principled, and often outnumbered group of heroes.

Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

Time well spent.
Revisado: 02-16-20
Donahue definitely did his research. The book moved along quickly and got to the point like any short story should. Learned a lot and really enjoyed the history. Note: I think the author is utterly confused when he compares these anti-Semitic warriors (who were fighting a specific racist ideology) to modern day ANTIFA. ANTIFA is not fighting fascism, they represent it.
