Tentacled intergalactic Christmas adventures

This was a completely adorable grumpy/sunshine galactic holiday romance adventure set in the Tentacular Tales universe (with minimal crossover, so can be read as a standalone). It was one of those stories that fell down the trope tree, hitting as many branches as possible along the way. On one tentacle, we have Khephren who was a sweet, wickedly smart, Christmas obsessed, tentacled, pink, cinnamon roll of an alien that spread sunshine as he bumbled along his intergalactic adventure escaping an unwanted mating. On the other was Sasha who was grumpy, wildly creative, and Christmas adverse with his feline companion Jonesey who fall prey to Khephren’s tractor beam when he tried for a human “expert” to help them have an authentic Christmas. Many hijinks later and it’s obvious the two were meant for each other. The whole thing was just a charming and fun Christmas romance with the kind of characters, situations, and humor the author is known for.

As always, Greg Boudreaux does an amazing job bringing the book to life and imbuing even more character in the story. From Khephren to Sasha, and new secondary characters to cameos of old favorites, they all have their own distinct voice and personality.

This was the first Gaynor Beach story of any kind I’ve read/listened to and while I think it could stand on its own, it probably would have been enhanced by being more familiar with the multi-author world. That said, it’s a nice story dealing with some heavy topics and offset by an adorable puppy. The romance between Colin and James was a little light and more on the slow burn side, especially with all Colin had to cope with. Widget was absolutely precious and stole the show, with second place going to James’s enormous, chaotic, loving family. Michael Ferraiuolo was a good choice to narrate here and does a fair job at using distinctive voices as well as emoting.

This was a nice addition to the Mission City collection. It was very much a slow burn romance between Ryan and Simeon, with a relatively low heat level. Both were dealing with a traumatic past and while “wounded”, found friendship and a source of solace with the other. There were plentiful cameos from familiar Mission City faces, plus the addition of Simeon’s wonderful grandparents to round out the side characters, not to mention the crew of canine companions. My main complaint with the story was a lack of communication between Ryan and Simeon but it was still an enjoyable listen. Michael Dean did a fantastic job narrating these characters.

I’m so happy we got a story for grown up-ish Wade! Riordan makes a good partner for him, with his patience and understanding. Plus, as a virtually immortal fae kin selkie, Riordan has a lifespan suitable for a dragon that will live a *very* long time. It’s less spicy than other Soulbound books (but appropriate considering Wade’s traumatized history), bordering on sweet at times. The action portion of the storyline fits right in line with the main series, with sufficient angst and twists keeping things interesting. Gary Furlong does a great job with the narration, giving it a similar vibe and pacing. Plus I really feel like he nailed Wade’s attitudes here.

While this technically is a “standalone”, it’s best enjoyed after all the rest for proper impact of Wade’s history along with characters and event references.

This was a larger than life archeological adventure a la Indiana Jones, with a healthy side of romance. While firmly entrenched in the archeology community with a strong family tradition of it, Kit Sawyer has always stayed on the sidelines with research thanks to his long history of epileptic seizures. That all changes when he’s compelled to put on a relic crown belonging to an ancient Aztec deity and sets off a prophecy. Accompanied by his former stepbrother Ethan, Kit sets off to the Mexican jungle hoping to find both a lost city and a legendary treasure. There’s the requisite trouble, danger, a truly nasty villain, and the opportunity for Kit to look at Ethan with new eyes and acknowledge love. The story is more than a little fantastical, but it’s certainly entertaining and has a few nail biting moments where you have to wonder how our heroes will survive.

Joel Leslie’s narration does a great job of vividly bringing this tale to life.

This was a charming but predictable short story (originally part of one of the Heart-to-Heart anthologies). It’s told entirely from Freddy’s POV and while that works, I would have liked more from Darcy. Freddy and Darcy are oblivious best friends, both pining for each other until Freddy is finally prodded to see the truth by one of the helpful little old ladies in his Austin literary tour group. Freddy and Darcy complement each other well and the side characters from the group are vivid.

As always, Joel Leslie is a delight to listen to and does a great job bringing the story to life.

Considering how short a few of these are, it makes sense to finally bundle them all together for release. It’s certainly a value over the individual stories.

I greatly enjoyed the two longer stories (Page Against the Machine and Ace’s Place), but struggled a bit with the shorter ones. I can play along with insta love/lust for the most part though Marcus’s Cadence and Not in It for the Money took that to unbelievable extremes. The format made it easy to break into different sessions, though, while Michael Dean was a pleasure to listen to.

This was such a fun book to read and the audiobook just took things to the next level. Greg Boudreaux is one of my absolute favorite narrators and he brought the story to life perfectly. There’s this blend of rom-com, space opera, action, and dramatic surprises, all wrapped up with River’s brand of extraness. The twists abound, but always at the heart of everything was the devotion between River and Kai.

The banter and one-liners between Dylan and Gabe are just as funny as I remembered in this follow up for the couple. Despite the humor, the story stresses slowing down and actually *listening* to one’s partner. Joel Leslie does a bang up job with the whole cast and is a delight to listen to.

I generally enjoyed this book, though some pieces of it were a tad confusing and seemingly incomplete. Despite his age, Lou was incredibly mature, sensible, and powerful. Camp was a good complement to him in terms of personality and ability and I liked how he grew over the story from expecting Lou to fit his life to seeing how best to fit together. I do wish there had been more emotion and romance between them though. Lance West did a fairly good job with narration, trying to differentiate voices for the various characters.
