I don't know what to think.
Revisado: 06-03-22
The story was good. I did really like it...except for a certain section near the end. But it was kinda appropriate to the overall story. But I'll be hanged if that wasn't the most abrupt ending to a book that I've ever heard. And I don't know what I think of it...except that I'd have rather that it ended differently. But then, I'm not the one who did the writing....

I have to admit to some bias (OK...a lot of bias). I only decided to listen to this book because there was a cat on the cover artwork...and I was curious. I was treated to a wonderful tale of 2 special young men having an adventure. It took a while, but they finally got to the cat. And I was not disappointed. If you're looking for high-brow fantasy, this book isn't for you. If you're looking for a light, very fun, listen, then I highly recommend this book. I genuinely enjoyed it. It was fun without the teenage angst and gratuitous groping that are often in books geared towards the young adult crowd while also appealing to actual adults who are looking to escape from the world's current climate.
I just hope that the other books in the series will be as good. I guess I'll find out.

Sally Jansen was NASA's leading astronaut, until a mission to Mars ended in disaster. Haunted by her failure, she lives in quiet anonymity, convinced her days in space are over. She's wrong. A large alien object has entered the solar system on a straight course toward Earth. It has made no attempt to communicate and is ignoring all incoming transmissions. Out of time and out of options, NASA turns to Jansen. For all the dangers of the mission, it's the shot at redemption she always longed for.

I admit that there were times that I wanted to scream "There's no Q in nuclear!" (It's a pet peeve of mine) and a couple of unfortunate pronunciations...but other than that it was quite the enjoyable listen. But my favorite thing? The book is finished in one volume! That's getting to be a rare thing. There's so many overblown series out there that start out with just one volume included in the membership...which means that (most of the time...but not always) you have to spend credits to finish the story. And most of them just aren't worth it. But this is done in one!

It's not bad...but not quite good enough for me to think that spending credits on getting the rest of the series is worth it. But if they're ever included as something we can borrow instead of buy, I'll definitely listen!

Revisado: 12-18-21
I think I paid $1 (maybe $3) for this book...or I would've returned it. It's bad...I mean *really* bad. The author, basically, plagerphased The Stand. I certainly don't think it was intentional...but it was painfully obvious. It was like The Stand and The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever (2 of my favorite things), had a baby. The performance was certainly adequate...but there's only so much a narrator can do.
The one good thing I can say about it is that it's good as background noise. It's long enough to let it run for an entire day...without making a person feel the need to really pay attention....

Historia
When the biggest colony ship in human history was sent to settle a paradise world, an accident hurtled it deep into uncharted space. A thousand light years from Earth, with no way home and no way to call for help, the colonists’ only hope for survival was the one barely habitable planet in range, a nightmare world they named Croatoan. Landing on the only five mountain peaks tall enough to rise above the lethal acid clouds, the settlers carved a civilization from the rock.

I liked the story, but....
Revisado: 11-30-21
The story was great. It left me wanting to know more. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find more that is an actual follow-up to issues in the book. I'll keep looking. Hopefully I'll find something...eventually.
But the narrator was absolutely awful! The pronunciations were fine...as was the tone of voice. However, he seems to have a tic that causes him to exhale forcefully through his nose at the end of most sentences. It is entirely off-putting, distracting and kept me from concentrating on the story and really getting into it. I pushed through and listened to the book all in one day because the thought of having to listen to that sound the next day was intolerable.
I'm honestly not trying to be mean, but I thought that it was worth bringing to someone's attention since I will be actively avoiding any books where he is the primary narrator. It was just that annoying.

Six years after the first manned Martian expedition, a second has been announced, this one motivated purely by its profitable potential. Half-Navajo geologist Jamie Waterman, a veteran of the first mission, feels his conflicted soul beckoning him back to the eerie, unforgiving planet. As commander of the new exploratory team, he will have to contend with a bitter and destructive rivalry, a disturbing new emotional attraction, and deadly, incomprehensible "accidents" that appear to be sabotage.

Revisado: 11-11-21
First of all, a technical complaint. The edits were sloppy and obvious. Besides the fact that there was some overlap, the tone and volume of the edits were different...enough to take me out of the story.
But my biggest complaint is of a more racial issue. And it's not a product of the current political climate. It would've made me uncomfortable regardless of what decade I would've listened. Also, I do understand that Mr Bova was trying to highlight an injustice and it wasn't a reflection of his personal attitudes. What am I talking about? Well, if you listened to the first book, you probably already know. There was entirely too much, "That damned Indian" this and "That damned redskin" that. I know that there's still some of that sentiment around, and probably always will be. But I simply refuse to believe that it was as widespread when this series was written as the overabundance of slurs would suggest. Hopefully he will have toned it down by the time I get to the next book utilizing these characters.
But, other than that, I really liked it and will doubtless listen again,

Revisado: 09-18-21
I don't particularly dislike the book, but I'm not doing backflips over it either. I *do* dislike the inclusion of the, apparently, obligatory love match between the geeky need girl scientist and her strapping secret service protector, though. And I got to stay home from school to watch the first mood landing...and the first man to set foot on the moon. Hint: it wasn't John Glenn. Also, I disliked that the nerdy scientist was ferried around in Marine One and Air Force Two...despite the fact that the president and vice president weren't on said aircraft. Which means that they weren't Marine One or Air Force Two at the time. Those are small issues, I know...but they really got on my nerves and are an indication of lack of attention to detail and took me out of the story. I don't anticipate listening to this a second time.
The only problem with the actual performance is that I have never heard such a horrible Scottish accent in my entire life! Better to have just made reference to how thick it was supposed to be and keep the performer's American accent intact. Other than that, the performance was just fine. I did deduct a star for it, though.

The story is OK...but....
Revisado: 09-13-21
There is no Q in nuclear!!!! I didn't mind the story, despite all the impossibilities (it is fiction, after all), but I absolutely can not keep a book that has the performer consistently mispronouncing the word "nuclear" in the most ignorant and annoying way possible. It annoys me even more than someone who says "libary" instead of library. It's one of my biggest pet peeves. I played the whole thing, but only as background noise at work. I still winced every time the performer said "nu-cue-ler". At first, I thought that maybe it was just a character in the book saying it that way...but then he had scientists saying it that way as well. And then I hoped that maybe it would change with the second book...or the third...but nope. It was consistent. And like nails on a chalkboard to me. If they ever re-record it with the proper pronunciation, I'd like to listen to it again, but as it is, I just can't deal with it. I have returned it.

Revisado: 09-05-21
The story is fine. Depressing, but what post apocalyptic fiction isn't. The performance is fine. But, Oh. My. God. I would never have imagined that the phrase "this fallen world" could be worked into a story so d*mn many times! The first dozen times, it was tolerable, but after that it started to be like nails on a chalkboard! Makes me nervous about listening to more of the series....
