Great book, narration could’ve been better
Revisado: 04-29-25
I read this book decades ago and loved it. I’m now enjoying re-“reading” many great books on Audible. I have to say that so many repeated mispronunciations really threw me off. Angel’s name, in particular, as well as saguaro, both with a hard “g” sound were like nails on a chalkboard. It’s Ahn-hell. Sah-waroh. No g sound.

Wonderful story, wonderful narration

Such great storytelling! I loved the format, seeing everything through each of the main characters’ eyes. The narration was perfect, and I’ve added a number of books to my wishlist narrated by Ruth Urquhart as a result.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Great story, great narration
Revisado: 01-07-25
The narrator can make or break an audiobook for me. This narration was exceptional. All of the difficult and very specific accents were true, and there wasn’t a forced feeling to narration of female voices which I often hear from male narrators.
Of course it helps when you’ve got such a wonderful book to read. The story and the way in which it was told was mesmerizing, and the only thing I didn’t like about it was that it had to end.

Great story

I loved the story, but the narration was a little distracting. It took me out of the story every time she tried to imitate the timbre of a masculine voice.

Pure enjoyment
Revisado: 11-15-24
Listening to Barbra walk me through her life and career was amazing! Pure nostalgia for the songs and movies coupled with great insight into the world of film and recording. Listening to it in late 2024, I wish she’d add another few chapters about the political world we find presented in now.

Historia
In its heyday, The Golden Hotel was the crown jewel of the hotter-than-hot Catskills vacation scene. For more than sixty years, the Goldman and Weingold families - best friends and business partners - have presided over this glamorous resort which served as a second home for well-heeled guests and celebrities. But the Catskills are not what they used to be - and neither is the relationship between the Goldmans and the Weingolds.

Charming story

Loved the story. While I’m not old enough to have enjoyed the borscht belt in its heyday, I recognize the characters. I didn’t love the narrator, though. Especially the attempt at a French accent.

Soooo good
Revisado: 07-20-23
I found these books as a result of falling in love with Shetland and Jimmy Perez through the BBC TV series. But in true fashion, the book(s) always better, right? I love learning the whole backstory in depth. This one really tugged at the heartstrings towards the end, and I can’t wait to start the next one.

Missing pieces of the puzzle
Revisado: 04-13-23
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, but I'm starting to wonder about abandoned storylines. What happened to Bruce Anderson's doppelganger? How about Bertie and Ranald's puppy? There are more loose ends, but those two, in particular, are driving me crazy! That's not to say I'm not going to buy every book, because I will. They're thoroughly entertaining, and I'm sad I'm now caught up to the most recent release. How am I expected to listen to a book that doesn't include all of my 44 Scotland Street friends? Hurry up, Alexander McCall Smith!
