Historia
It's 1895, and after the suicide of her mother, 16-year-old Gemma Doyle is shipped off from the life she knows in India to Spence, a proper boarding school in England. Lonely, guilt-ridden, and prone to visions of the future that have an uncomfortable habit of coming true, Gemma's reception there is a chilly one.

a love letter to my bittersweet nostalgia
Revisado: 02-12-25
i read this for the first time in middle school with my best girlfriends, & was so happy to hear it narrated so well. never fails to bring me years back whether i read it — such a quaint coming-of-age tale with just the right amount of friendship, inner turmoil, & the essential touch of magic

Historia
To enter the woods as a human means death… But I am no mere human. They call me, “witch.” As one of the last surviving witches, Faelyn’s sole duty is to keep the protective barriers on the forests where the lykin roam—creatures who can shed flesh for fur—sparing nearby humans from their violent, beastly natures. When she has an unlikely encounter with the rare, primordial spirit of the moon, Faelyn finds herself not only the object of the Wolf King’s desire, but essential to his ability to keep his crown.

Another good one from Elise Kova
Revisado: 09-16-24
as an avid wolf and fantasy lover – – not to mention, oddly obsessed with the moon – – there are many aspects of this story that I enjoy. Although the female lead was quite likable, Aurora was hands-down my favorite character; followed by Avander. I also really love how all of the magic married to magic novels weave together in varying degrees. I definitely liked the story overall, although it was not my favorite in the series, it was refreshing and original (the way that witches work with spirits was one of my favorite aspects for sure)

a fairy twist on a beauty & the beast retelling
Revisado: 07-09-24
the first half of the book seems to really trudge along… there were interesting parts, but the pace was slow overall. the second half picked up into a dramatic plot with all the right kind of suspense, rising action, & emotional tension. the second half of the book is what really drew me in—i’m already invested in book two!

Historia
A girl makes a secret sacrifice to the faerie king in this lush New York Times best-selling fantasy by author Holly Black. In the woods is a glass coffin. It rests on the ground, and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives...Hazel and her brother, Ben, live in Fairfold, where humans and the Folk exist side by side. Since they were children, Hazel and Ben have been telling each other stories about the boy in the glass coffin, that he is a prince and they are valiant knights, pretending their prince would be different from the other faeries.

darkly beautiful, wonderfully weird, & unapologetically all its own
Revisado: 06-02-24
Yet another masterwork of Holly Black to add to the proverbial stack of favorites. I couldn’t even name all of the things that I love about her writing without rambling off the page, but her stories absolutely ensnare & enchant you… beautifully bizarre, like a gasoline rainbow. this book is particularly charming, especially how blurred the lines of reality are between the human & faerie worlds; similar to Hazel’s night self & day self being separate but one in the same. the characters all had very likable & relatable personalities with an allure that leaves you wanting for more—I would be delighted to hear more about Jack: his mysterious past/lineage, his future escapades with the lands & folk of faerie, & the intricacies of his mortal & immortal relationships. fingers crossed!! xx

a delightful mix of action & romance
Revisado: 05-14-24
as someone who readily enjoys the lore & mythology that lay the bones of this series, i knew i was bound to love the story surrounding my favorite characters from greek/roman mythology (persephone & hades). this most recent installment was particularly captivating & well-orchestrated. my only quip is that there are so many erotic scenes, it almost takes away some of the magic that those moments would normally have. overall, this is one of my favorite hades & persephone stories, & i will be waiting intently for the next one!

magically memorable
Revisado: 05-13-24
i find myself coming back to this story again & again. while i adore “a deal with the elf king" of the ‘married to magic' series, this novel is just as special. both protagonists are not only quite likable, but also very relatable. the story itself has a unique take on sirens that is interesting and exciting. i really enjoyed the mentions of the other novels in the series and i am looking forward to seeing how they all tie together in what comes next!

always loved the story of hades & persephone with a dash of romance.. this book & its prequel have that in spades ! although i am somewhat impartial to the abundance of explicit scenes, that is only because it almost seems like the excess of them takes away from the passion / tenderness of those moments

SOOO much better than book 1!
Revisado: 03-31-24
it was almost like i was reading an entirely different series in book two vs book one! i honestly did not enjoy much about the first one ("the moonfire bride") as it really dragged & had hardly any character development or events; this one, however, was actually very, very good!! i enjoyed the characters, the plot, & the trials in between — the ending was satisfying as well. worth a read for sure!

Revisado: 02-08-24
as someone with the tendency to devour novel after novel within an impossibly short amount of time, this one took me multiple months to get through. it is not exactly bad, but i certainly would not label it as good, either… the most glaringly obvious issues being: (1.)how absurdly boring it is for the first half of the book & (2.) the undoubtably unlikable main character, who is basically a whiny brat without any real depth to her character. in the same token, there is something to be said for authors who write characters without flaws, which is not realistic or relatable; this leading lady, however, failed to incite my investment in her at all. the male protagonist is much better. the story itself had a lot of potential for a riveting plot, but it was not executed to its potential in my opinion. overall, considering the last half hour to an hour as the its peak, i may end up reading the sequel — mostly because i imagine that it is very likely a better book if it picks up where the first one ended. i hope this review was helpful to anyone scrolling through!
