Historia
Countess Ellen Olenska, separated from her European husband, returns to old New York society. She bears with her an independence and an awareness of life which stirs the educated sensitivity of the charming Newland Archer, engaged to be married to her cousin, May Welland. Though he accepts the society's standards and rules he is acutely aware of their limitations. He knows May will assure him a conventional future but Ellen, scandalously separated from her husband, forces Archer to question his values and beliefs.

Play it slower
Revisado: 05-18-23
A frustratingly sad story, but such a beautiful one.
It is read well, however I could understand it better when played at 95% of full speed. The English pronunciation tripped me up now and then otherwise.

Hearing Siu’s healing journey is genuinely moving and inspires me to open to a new level of understanding. My only criticism is that I wish it was longer…

Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Great Performance of a Masterpiece
Revisado: 01-12-21
This book requires attentive listening because of its complexity and the rapid fire pace of some sections. Narrator Joe Morton, however, makes the characters distinct and each scene come to life vividly.
Simply a masterful performance of this important book.

Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

My first Murakami
Revisado: 02-20-19
This book was like a long, involved dream through which the protagonist grows in his self awareness and understanding of those around him. It doesn't make sense in a conventional linear fashion, and requires careful listening to keep the events straight. Ultimately the story-- a mystery of sorts-- works cumulatively, creating an alternate world of challenges and influences propelling Toru Okada forward. An amazing book I'll be listening to again.

Historia
With authoritative reporting honed through eight presidencies from Nixon to Obama, author Bob Woodward reveals in unprecedented detail the harrowing life inside President Donald Trump’s White House and precisely how he makes decisions on major foreign and domestic policies. Woodward draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, meeting notes, personal diaries, files, and documents. The focus is on the explosive debates and the decision-making in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Air Force One, and the White House residence.

Can't Take It
Revisado: 10-18-18
I made it about half way through, and decided it was pointless to continue on. I was learning about some of the disfunction of the White House under Trump (no surprise there), but there is no analysis or deeper digging regarding the policies and the rampant disregard for policy impact on our future. Listening was torture, and not particularly illuminating. Returning.

Historia
Ever since medical school, Dr. Christiane Northrup has been guided by an essential truth about the way our bodies, minds, and souls are intertwined. It's the same truth Edgar Cayce expressed in this famous formula: The spirit is life. The mind is the builder. The physical is the result. When we don't grasp this - when we view our bodily well-being in isolation - life can devolve into constant worry about our health and constant battling to make our bodies "behave".

Fantasy and truth Confused
Revisado: 02-18-17
I couldn't finish this. Practical healthy suggestions were interspersed with wish-fulfillment crud right out of "the Secret". If that's what you want, then this will be your cup of tea. I believe in the mind- body connection, and the helpfulness of envisioning your goals, and even asking for help from unknown sources, but the underlying privilege of her assumptions and claims drove me crazy.

Historia
On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

Vulnerability has value
Revisado: 02-07-15
I liked brown's main points and many of her illustrative stories. I did wish that she meandered less and talked a bit more about the research itself. The message of vulnerability's blessings came through loud and clear, however.
