Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Incredible story, best of Andy Weir’s works, by far!
Revisado: 03-01-25
Absolutely incredible story! Characters development was excellent in that familiar Weir-way. The main character is reminiscent of Mark Watney from “The Martian” without being a recycle of an old character. The story was entertaining, exciting, and original. Plot twists are realist, timely, and compelling! I couldn’t stop listening to this book!! Highly recommend for fans or Weir and new-comers alike!

For a decade now, the world has known of the existence of the immuno-degenerative and epidermal decomposition virus (strain two). The world governments and several civilian agencies have, so far, managed to keep the unimaginable from happening. They achieved it by keeping the outbreaks under control and preventing a global pandemic.

A fun & interesting take on an “ultimate prepper” scenario…
Revisado: 07-29-24
I think it’s important when reading zombie/apocalypse books to keep in mind that they will not be a Max Brooks or TW Brown style of writing or plot journey. That said, these books can be a lot of fun, if the reader allows themselves the willingness to enjoy the book for what it is; rather than holding it to a “top tier” standard of expectation.
What I liked about the book:
• The book has solid character development, which goes a long way to building the reader’s connection to each character.
• The losses suffered by the group also contributed to the quality of the story, the suspension of disbelief/doubt, and character development.
• I LOVED that this book takes place after the initial zombie apocalypse, when the world is in the process of rebuilding (don’t worry, this isn’t a spoiler, it’s acknowledged right away). Starting the book in a circumstance where the characters have a familiarity with the undead dispels doubt from the reader, when characters are able to navigate combating zombies easily.
• The time spent developing the virus & how it mutates to attack human beings was something I really appreciated in the early part of the story. The author spent time researching how this virus was able to effect the human body and immune system, which was a fun & nerdy feature that some zombie stories leave out.
Things I felt could be improved:
• The characters are, at time, cliche which does take away from the story at times. The men can be overly macho, the women overly irrational and/or dependent, and the children don’t get a lot of character development, in ways that aren’t relatable. It’s certainly not something that ruins the book, but it’s noticeable at times and made it hard to stay immersed in the story.
• The narrator repeatedly mispronounced a few words that, for preppers, gun enthusiasts, and those who appreciate proper pronunciation, became a little frustrating. Again, absolutely not a dealbreaker - but a distraction from the story. Words like the weapon manufacturer “Heckler & Koch” & the dog breed “Malinois” are mispronounced each time they occur.
• The narrator also has a limited range of vocal variations which made all of the men sound similar to each other. This was also true for the women & children. The book is written so that the speaker is often identified by name, but it still can be confusing if you’re multitasking while listening.
• Lastly, I did wish that a character who is a native Spanish speaker would have been given a little more of his own development. This may happen in the next book, but during this first one, he became something of a loyal but simple caricature of a “Spanish sidekick” which may not land well with some readers; but also did an injustice to the value the character could have brought to the story, with a little more depth and development.
Overall, the book was definitely above average and I’m looking forward to listening to the second in the series!

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Incredible performances from Andrew Garfield, Cynthia Erivo, & Andrew Scott! Tom Hardy did a great job embodying the looming omnipresence of Big Brother’s voice! I sincerely hope the success of this reading inspires aubilbe and the actors to perform an unabridged version.

Great story, excellent narrator!
Revisado: 04-16-24
Well written, great character development, believable events/situations, and not too much plot armor . It was a little weighted in religious references, but that’s certainly not a mark against the author’s abilities; just a small acknowledgement of a personal preference. Overall a great read!! Highly recommend!

Historia
Before the lights went out, Jack Warrant never considered himself a prepper. That was someone on the edge, a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday cultist who had a fatalistic view of the world. He was neither a theorist nor a cultist. He was an optimist. At least that was what he told himself when the darker thoughts creeped into his psyche as he stared at the ceiling in the middle of the night. Whenever he started down the rabbit hole, he always clawed his way back into the sunlight.

Slow start, but a great read.
Revisado: 03-27-24
I’m normally like my SHTF served up, zombie-apocalypse-style. However, being that I’m also someone who believes in being prepared, I thought it would be a good idea to listen to a narrative with a more likely scenario. Although the story was a little slow to start, the story was great and the plausibility of the events are certainly realistic. An excellent book with characters that were akin to those you’d find in a Clive Cussler book… but more authentically human; rather than plot-armored heroes. Highly recommend this book! Looking forward to the next in the series!

"A bite or scratch will turn the victims to one of the infected within 72 hours..." Those words rang in Evan Berry's head. Waking to discover he'd been scratched was a death sentence. Deciding that he would not force Carl or Betty to have to put him down after he turned, Evan said farewell to his group and slipped out in the middle of the night. Deciding that he would make one last run in the hopes that he could bring back enough supplies for his beloved Newfoundland, Chewie, Evan embarks on a quest that will show him just how fast and far society has fallen.

Stephanie, his bride-to-be, even has a surprise planned for him when he gets home from work that first night. None of that matters. Another Great Work By TW
Revisado: 02-16-24
TW’s New Dead series has delivered what his fans have come to appreciate about his work. Great character development & plot, as well as harsh and graphic realism when it comes to the dark side of humanity after being thrust into an apocalypse. While this book was noticeably tame, compared to some of the books in original series, the plot of these New Dead books will likely follow in the footsteps of their predecessors. I enjoyed TW’s acknowledgements and appreciation of the feedback that he received from the original 12-book Dead series. Something that troubled me though, was when he’d explained that he’d been harassed and threatened by people who’d been angered by the content of his original series & that he’d even received death threats. I think the warning placed on this book stating “content may not be appropriate for sensitive readers” was the result of these reactions from angered readers. In the case that you are new to this author and series, and have not yet read the original books, consider this review as an additional trigger warning: THESE BOOKS & SERIES CONTAIN VERY GRAPHIC CONTENT - read on at your own risk & consent.

More adventurous than “realistic”, in a good way…
Revisado: 02-04-24
Great storyline that’s well written and allows for a nice pace of character development. Definitely enjoyable for survivalists and SHTF enthusiasts, who are less concerned with realism and are open to willfully suspending their disbelief/skepticism. Unlike other authors in the “Zombie” genre (Max Brooks, TW Brown, Jacy Morris, Nick Clausen, and Keith Taylor) the Infected Dead series has given its very-likable cast noticeably thicker plot armor; which was a nice change of pace from the abundance of “what can go wrong, will go wrong” scenarios in the books of the above mentioned authors. Depictions of stress, fear, fatigue, bad luck, and unexpected tragedies that would likely happen to most, if not all of us, are certainly appreciated in the apocalyptic genre for their ability to create realism, but it has been somewhat refreshingly enjoyable to read something less fraught with narrative turbulence and tribulation in favor of more ideal circumstances for the characters. It is definitely not something I’d hope to come across often but in this particular case, it was an unexpected treat. Enjoy!
