I really like the author's work.
For whatever reason, this narrator puts me to sleep. That is sometimes a good thing.

Was a free audiobook so I gave it a try. Couldn't understand why it was well rated, so I glanced at some other reviews. Predictably, mostly men loved it. Personally, I resonate most with what one woman wrote: this makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

Trog fiction like this seems like a regurgitation of the 1970s. The story is mostly about the protagonist living out (the author's?) dreams of sexual conquest. Characters are pretty 2-dimensional and plot lines are extremely thin. Women, specifically, are principally described by their appearance (all nubile, gorgeous, and predominantly "top heavy"). They are referred to more often as "blonds" than people. Protagonist (mid 30’s if timeline makes sense) has sex with "girls" aged 17 to 20's. Makes me sad that the author is not willing to explore deeper human relationships. Sick pap.

Plot and story are equally weak. Literally no contemplation of billions of lives lost, death of the protagonist’s family and everyone he has known. Glosses over vague alien threat, responsible for near extinction of mankind, but with no actual presence/contact. 150 years post apocalypse everyone lives without electricity but speak textbook English and have no public health issues. No grit. Zero existential edge. Near magical technology with no detail on how anything actually might work. High fantasy, low reality… Would not have been surprised if unicorns or alien/robot sex was right around the corner. (Oh wait… that seems to be in book 7).

No doubt, this “last man on earth” male fantasy appeals and is responsible for strong XY reviews. Grow up, guys!

Really tired to give this free audiobook a fair shake. A dozen chapters in it is still disgusting and story weak. Sad but predictable. Guess that is what sells.

This was recommended by a family member and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The author does a laudable job of providing an even-handed appreciation for the human experience of captives, natives, and settlers.

Especially enjoyable as we live near where all these events took place. Helps one both appreciate and lament the history of our region.

After listening, gifted a copy to my step father, who is part Comanche.

I really enjoyed how the author unfolds the story. it is complex and compelling. Every time I thought the mystery was solved, there was yet another layer.

Good character development in quite a bit of social commentary, especially with respect to male female social roles. I'm not sure why it was necessary that all the empowered women, apart from the protagonist, we're necessarily sinister.

My only dig is that there are quite a few factual errors with respect to bees, a primary theme of the novel. Just a little research by the author would have made this book even better.

I am so grateful for Isabel Wilkerson's latest book, which has allowed me to see things in a whole new way. Truly can open minds and hearts, and makes what is really going on.

What can I say?

The author's description of female characters is really outdated. Every woman is introduced and described principally by her body shape. Further, he describes one as dark skinned _but_ with light eyes and another as blond haired _and_ blue eyed.

Mr. Scott needs to evolve a bit in his perspective/writing. It is just too clear that he views women as "other" and women of color as "other, exotic". Kind of what I'd expect from something written in the 1970s rather than 2019.

I've never written anything similar about another book. This stuck out bad enough for me that I just couldn't continue listening and quit.

The next book I listened to was Saturn's Monsters, by Thomas J. Carpenter, which provided a refreshing contrast of a male author writing woman's character (proving it can be done better).

Really like this author and series... kind of reminiscent of John D McDonald, with a bit more humor and without the mesogeny of that era.
well researched.

A phenomenal work!
Really does a terrific job of clearly explaining the unintended consequences of U.S. food policies.
Describes the forces at work in opposition to more sane, healthy, and sustainable agriculture.
Outlines possibilities to transition out of the agribusines-dictated status quo that impoverishes farmers, land and water resources, and people.
We have a shared responsibility to understand our part in this food chain.

I tend towards time travel as I am attracted to the "what if" paradoxes, novel logic, and scientific questions it poses.

This novel is time travel only in the way Rumple Stilskin is. [spoiler] There is a "shimmering door" that takes the protagonist on a single trip into a stone age future. The mechanism is never explained. Future Oregon is filled with perfect humans of large stature and giant monstrous bears, wolves, snakes, cockroaches and even prairie dogs. Again, no explanation as to how or why this is so.

All in all, this book reads more like a fantasy novel... just not my cup of tea.

Character development, world-building, language creation, and plot are good. Excellent blow-by-blow description of combat (again, not my thing but wanted to acknowledge). Interesting social commentary on our society's distinctions with conflict and technology.

Has a few silly flaws, such as not understanding that the largest pinecones grow on the largest branches, lower in the tree, and out toward the branch tips (female cones).

Narration for the audio book is first rate... one of the reasons I stuck with it to the end of the first book.

I recognize that many will enjoy this book. Just wanted to explain what did and didn't work for me.

I have listened to quite a few audiobooks and am probably over-critical... have to say this is one of the best stories I've listened to in quite a while. Gripping and clever plot, great character development, insightful articulation.
One of the best voice acting performances ever! That was what drove me to purchase both books.
Haywood and Prekopp are now both on my favorites list.
