Brilliant, beautiful page-turner!
Revisado: 10-09-19
Dorothy Dunnett is the greatest historical novelist, and this is one of her best. You should read/listen to the first two in the series first, but THIS book is the one where an antagonist's campaign against Francis Crawford's protagonist reaches new heights, and depths of depravity, driving the story to a riveting, devastating climax. David Monteath's narration brings new levels of understanding to the beautiful words, new shadings of characterization to the rich personalities on the page. Don't hesitate to listen to this one!

Historia
Somewhere within the bejeweled labyrinth of the Ottoman empire, a child is hidden. Now his father, Francis Crawford of Lymond, soldier of fortune and the exiled heir of Scottish nobility, is searching for him while ostensibly engaged on a mission to the Turkish sultan. At stake is the political order of three continents, for Lymond's child is a pawn in a cutthroat game whose gambits include treason, enslavement, and murder. In that game's final move, which is played inside the harem of the Topkapi palace, Lymond will come face to face with his most implacable enemy.

The best historical novelist meets the best voice
Revisado: 10-09-19
The Dunnett/Monteath (writer/narrator) killer duo continues in this jaw-droppingly great historical novel. Pawn in Frankincense (fourth in the Lymond Chronicles - it's best to read the books in order) will take you on a mind-boggling journey from the France of Henri II, along the Mediterranean to Turkey in the age of Suleiman the Magnificent. Then it'll rip your heart out and leave you glad that it did. This novel is a great one in any form, but listening to David Monteath's masterful narration brings new levels of understanding and suspense to the experience. Highest recommendation.

Historia
It is 1547, and Scotland has been humiliated by an English invasion and is threatened by machinations elsewhere beyond its borders, but it is still free. Paradoxically, her freedom may depend on a man who stands accused of treason. He is Francis Crawford of Lymond, a scapegrace nobleman of crooked felicities and murderous talents, possessed of a scholar's erudition and a tongue as wicked as a rapier. In The Game of Kings, this extraordinary antihero returns to the country that has outlawed him to redeem his reputations even at the risk of his life.

Wonderful, wonderful!
Revisado: 06-23-19
I've read this book in print many times. It is one of my all-time favorites, so I had some reservations that an audiobook could be as good an experience as a regular read. But I needn't have worried. David Monteath and the audio producers have outdone themselves! I've falling in love with this book all over again, thanks to them. Monteath's Scottish accent is perfection, and his lovely voice helps evoke the mellifluous tones of the beloved main character, Lymond, as well as the roar of Buccleuch, and all the rest. I will be buying the whole series on audio.

Historia
Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

Delightful Radio-Drama Type Listen
Revisado: 05-26-19
I see other reviewers here who didn't like the background noises and the radio-drama aspects of this piece. I had a different experience. I loved it! So go into this one knowing that you'll hear silverware in dinner scenes, and other appropriate background noises at times. None of it distracted me, or got too loud. My only complaint was that they paused a bit too often between "chapters" for music - the same music each time. That was unnecessary, but it didn't detract from the perfect performances by the actors, particularly the excellent Emma Thompson as the narrator. There couldn't be a more perfect choice! Certain scenes are downright hilarious, as they should be, and some are incredibly touching. Highly recommend!

Delightful and Riveting!
Revisado: 08-08-17
Would you listen to The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue again? Why?
The narrator was so fantastic and the prose so engaging, I would totally listen to it again.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Felicity the sister was brainy and hilarious, but my favorite had to be the narrator, Monty, who is smarter than he thinks, very funny, and who learns a lot during this page-turning adventure.
What about Christian Coulson’s performance did you like?
Everything! A brilliant performance.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I could have, I would. I found myself sneaking in listens whenever I could.
Any additional comments?
Brilliant, elegant, witty, romantic prose in a well-researched historical novel filled with a family of characters I wanted to hang out with - this is a marvelous book in any form, but the terrific narration by Christian Coulson makes it an audiobook that deserves to win awards as well.
