Fabulous:in my top ten
Revisado: 08-07-20
The whole murderbot series, and I've listened to them all, not read them, is just absolutely wonderful. the narrator is top-notch. The writing is wry and a little touching. I just can't recommend it enough.
This book is no exception.

Historia
When Greta Helsing, doctor to the undead, is unexpectedly called to Paris to present at a medical conference, she expects nothing more exciting than professional discourse on zombie reconstructive surgery and skin disease in bogeymen - and hopefully at least one uneventful night at the Opera. Unfortunately for Greta, Paris happens to be infested with a coven of vampires - and not the civilized kind. If she hopes to survive, Greta must navigate the darkest corners of the City of Lights, the maze of ancient catacombs and mine-tunnels underneath the streets.

A nice horror cozy to while away your afternoon
Revisado: 08-05-18
Dreadful company is the second book in Vivian Shaw series and it follows its predecessor in that it provides an interesting plot and lovely cast of characters. I'm not sure to call it a thriller or a horror novel or a fantasy, but is certainly entertaining. The Protagonist, Dr. Helsing, is compelling, and is surrounded by a cast of loyal and affectionate monsters. The whole thing was over far too quickly, and I look forward to the next volume in the series.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

UPDATE: Really quite a good simple story => Great
Revisado: 04-21-18
My original review is:
This was a good simple story. The narration starts a little bit shaky, but either it gets better or I got used to it. Overall I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to the next book in the series which I believe is out in May. Of note, there is no love story, and there's minimal but sufficient action.
Now I think:
This is a great story: an introduction to a really great series. It may be short, but I have re-listened to it at least 4 times, maybe more. I'm not exactly sure why my opinion has changed so much since my initial reading, but I now really love the narrator, and cannot understand what I mentioned as "initial shakiness" in my original review. I have changed my review to 5 stars across the board . Get this book and all the others the follow in the series.

Historia
It is the year 1989 in the Angevin Empire - an alternative universe much like our own, save for two vital differences: the House of Plantagenet (the descendants of King Richard I the Lion-Heart and his nephew, Prince Arthur) still rules in England and France and the New World; and, the science of magic has displaced the magic of science. But magic can't solve everything. In a temple atop an ancient Azteque pyramid in New England, where bloody sacrifices were carried out and the beating hearts excised from living victims to appease a horrific god, lies a freshly-killed body....

Lord Darcy in The New World
Revisado: 08-05-17
this wasn't the most absolutely fabulous entry in the Lord D'Arcy series, but it was a lot of fun and it is always a joy to hear from our old friends again. Michael Kurland has done a fine job in reinvigorating Glee series, and I hope to hear more of him in the future.

The elderly Emily Pride is perfectly pleased to have inherited an island, even if her starchy pragmatism is ever so faintly appalled by the Pixie Falls spring and its reported miraculous healing properties. But really, the locals' attempts to capitalize on the 'miracles' are entirely too tacky - Ye Olde Gift Shoppe, the neon signs…not on Miss Emily’s watch, thank you.

If it is what you want, it is just the ticket.
Revisado: 10-09-15
This is an English mystery of the old school. It's not quite a country house mystery, but set along the same lines. The mystery itself is not so mysterious, but the inspector and his side kicks are all present, and it has a satisfying ending. If you what you are looking for is a comfortable mystery with old friends, this book has it.
The narration itself is competent, transparent, and not at all stagey.

Historia
A secret backdoor meeting between Ambassador Ode Abumwe and the Conclave’s Hafte Sorvalh turns out to be less than secret, as both of their ships are attacked. It’s a surprise to both teams - but it’s the identity of the attacker that is the real surprise, and suggests a threat to both humanity and The Conclave. "A Problem of Proportion" is a tale from John Scalzi's The Human Division, a series of self-contained but interrelated short stories set in the Old Man's War universe.

A good entry into the series, but a sad one :( All the usual characters with some amusing alien 'grunts' thrown into the mix.

Narrator is getting a bad rap
Revisado: 06-27-11
Several reviewers here have made complaints of M. Holloway's delivery. I think they are making too much of a muchness out of it.
Are there some mis-emphasized words or phrases? Yes. But in general, this is a workmanlike narration of the text without a lot of interpretation, and the delivery does not detract from the story, which is great.
I have heard too many titles ruined by over ambitious narration, and I am glad that M. Holloway errs on the the side of caution.

In Up Jumps the Devil, fast-moving progress is threatening to forever destroy the leisurely, heart-warming pace of Colleton County, North Carolina. District Court Judge Deborah Knott sees trouble brewing when plans for a new interstate highway start pushing up property values. Deborah finds herself calming the combatants with down-home wit, but when the squabbles escalate to murder, Deborah is forced to search for a killer uncomfortably close to home.

Enjoyable Story, but not the narator's best work
Revisado: 04-07-04
A combination murder mystery and family drama, Up Jumps the Devil delivers the clearest image yet Deborah Knott's large and diverse family and background. The mystery is a bit of a yawn, and the narrative is a somewhat disjointed, but, if you are a Knott fan, you will delight in the details of her and her family's background. If you cotton to a more plot driven yarn, you may not be as satisfied. The narration is a bit stilted. In some places it seems Critt is injecting perkiness into her delivery of a sentence to cover her lack of understanding of its context. Her earlier Knott series performances were more satisfying.

Historia
Under a Bangkok bridge, inside a bolted-shut Mercedes: a murder by snake - a charismatic African-American Marine sergeant killed by a methamphetamine-stoked python and a swarm of stoned cobras. Two cops - the only two in the city not on the take - arrive too late. Minutes later, only one is alive: Sonchai Jitpleecheep - a devout Buddhist, equally versed in the sacred and the profane - son of a long-gone Vietnam War G.I. and a Thai bar girl whose subsequent international clientele contributed richly to Sonchai’s sophistication. Bangkok 8 worth the listen
Revisado: 06-15-03
John Burdett presents an engrossing cast of characters in an intriguing city. The plot is somewhat outlandish, and the conclusion quite a bit less than satisfying, but these weaknesses are offset both by the excellent reading by B.D. Wong and the insights into the police force, racial influences, philosophy and sexual attitudes of modern Thailand.
