Historia
Shadows of the Empire illuminates the shadowy outlines of a criminal conspiracy that exists in the background of the events in the movies, ruled by a character new to us. Prince Xizor is a mastermind of evil who dares to oppose one of the best-known fictional villains of all time: Darth Vader. The story involves all the featured Star Wars movie characters, plus Emperor Palpatine and, of course, Lord Vader himself.

Revisado: 10-18-23
I love this book. This audiobook is not good. The performance is meh. The narrator can’t even pronounce things correctly. He’s not unskilled, but the director phoned it in. The production is terrible. The modern generation of Star Wars audiobooks put this to absolute shame. I don’t know why abridged audiobooks exist, but they should be way more clearly indicated than this.

Historia
After walking through the portal in the Tower of Swallows while narrowly escaping death, Ciri finds herself in a completely different world...an Elven world. She is trapped, with no way out. Time does not seem to exist, and there are no obvious borders or portals to cross back into her home world. But this is Ciri, the child of prophecy, and she will not be defeated. She knows she must escape to finally rejoin the Witcher, Geralt, and his companions - and also to try to conquer her worst nightmare.

Weakest of a GREAT Series
Revisado: 01-20-22
Maybe the storytelling devices don’t translate to audio well, but the jumping around, flashbacks, flash-forwards, and and the frequent perspective shifts to people uninvolved with the actual story (people telling the legends of what happened) just made parts of the book drag on. A whole section of just jumping between universes with basically no plot or character development was awful.
When the book just told the story, it was as good as the rest of the series. The end was a letdown, but I don’t know if there’s a really satisfying way to end the story without being stereotypical.

Historia
Serial killers: Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer are often the first names that spring to mind. Many people assume serial killers are primarily an American phenomenon that came about in the latter part of the 20th century. But such assumptions are far from the truth. Serial killers have been around for a very long time and can be found in every corner of the globe - and they're not just limited to the male gender either. Some of these predators have been caught and brought to justice whereas others have never been found, let alone identified.

Inconsistent
Revisado: 10-09-20
Overall, this was a decent read. It suffers from inconsistent writing quality. Some of the sections were meandering and didn’t seem to maintain a narrative thread. Others were just fine. The narration was good, but nothing special.

Fantastic
Revisado: 06-26-19
Good story covering the underdeveloped relationship between Qui Gon and Obi Wan. The performance by Davis was top notch. It was one of the first in a long time that didn’t make me cringe when he was reading lines from the opposite gender. Too many male narrators over do the female voices, turning them sound like whiners or other wise over-done, especially in other Star Wars books recently.

Thoughtful, Thurough, and Analttical
Revisado: 12-21-18
Griesbach does as well as anybody can hope in setting aside his biases (which he is clear about) to recount how Making A Murder caused him to reevaluate his thought on the Halbach case, and how his decision to review the facts led him to discover how maipulative the series was. By refusing to draw any conclusion in anybody's favor without the evidence to back it up and clearly acknowledging the limits of what can be learned from the evidence, Griesbach asks the reader to engage in a thoughtful analysis of the case rather than reacting emotionally to what is, regardless of your view of the facts, a terrible tragedy.
Foster's narration is very good, but I couldn't help notice each time he mispronounced some of the Wisconsin locations just enough to make me cringe slightly (e.g. Manitowoc, Calumet and Bonduel). Unless you're familiar with the area, you won't notice that.

“I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.” Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root - its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn.

My Least-Favorite Zahn Book
Revisado: 08-06-18
I don't like the dual-timeline storytelling device. I don't much care for Clone Wars era, so this book was never going to be me favorite. I was originally thinking that this story was complete throwing out Outbound Flight (Legends), but looking back I don't know that they're incompatible. Not that Disney cares... If you don't share those biases, you will probably see quality Zahn work. He's good, even when I don't necessarily like what he's writing.
I didn't care for the voices for Anakin or Padme. They both came across as whiney, which can be appropriate for Anakin, but not Padme. For the most part, Thompson's reading is very good, but when 2 of the 4 main characters are sometimes a chore to listen to, that was though for me, especially early on. I sympathize with the struggle though.

The evolution of the Arab empire is one of the supreme narratives of ancient history, a story dazzlingly rich in drama, character, and achievement. In this exciting and sweeping history - the third in his trilogy of books on the ancient world - Tom Holland describes how the Arabs emerged to carve out a stupefyingly vast dominion in a matter of decades, overcoming seemingly insuperable odds to create an imperial civilization.

Not Holland's best work
Revisado: 11-21-16
I really wanted to love this book. I'm a big fan of Tom Holland's work in written and audio format, but this book was difficult to follow. I could not tell what the presentation style was because it did not seem to follow a thematic progression and it certainly wasn't a narrative history. It just seemed to meander through time and place. While the minute to minute listening was classic Holland, I had no idea how anything fit with what I had heard previously or would hear subsequently.

Delightful!
Revisado: 10-28-16
The book is very Anglo-centric as would be expected considering the authors. Don't let that stop you from giving this book a listen. It's a funny, entertaining and informative exploration of soccer/football culture, personalities, history and passion. I know some of the jokes are lost on me as an American, but that didn't stop the Ramble from being an awesome book.

Disjointed performance
Revisado: 06-17-16
Some sections were narrated by the main narrator. Some sections had voice actors for individual roles. Both were good, but the lack of consistency threw me off.
Other than that, it was a solid and enjoyable listen.

Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Solid book.
Revisado: 04-19-16
My biggest complaint about the book is the frequency with which French words and terms are used with the expectation that people will know what they mean. I don't know if there are footnotes or citations in the written version, but listening does not lend itself well to stopping to look up terms.
As with most history books, the audio version is sometimes hard to follow because of the number of names around. That's more of an issue with the genre, not this book in particular. Overall it was very enjoyable.
