A fascinating perspective on human relations.
Revisado: 07-17-24
This was a compelling drama centered around the lives of individuals in a southern county. The storyline was engaging, with well-developed characters that captivated the audience. The historical backdrop added depth and vividness, offering a glimpse into the realities of the time. The courtroom scenes were particularly gripping, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. The relatable and unexpected characters allowed for a shift in perspective. Michael Baldacci skillfully incorporated the essence of "To Kill a Mockingbird" into a cast of characters that felt more familiar and relatable.

Historia
Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge. Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students?

Excellent read
Revisado: 10-30-23
The story was engaging, thought provoking, educational, and moving. This was a mature novel, not because of the topic, but because it treated the reader with respect. It taught the reader without being patronizing.
The characters had depth and personality and the description of Cambridge made me envision myself there.
Kobna Holdbrook-Smith brought just the right voice to his character. He brought him to life and made him believable.
I was thrilled when I heard Louise Brealey as Mariana. She captured her emotion and timidity perfectly, while still giving the other characters their own voice.
This was an excellent read and I strongly recommend it, especially with the superb voice actors.

Historia
Most people know Andrew McCarthy from his movie roles in Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, Weekend at Bernie's, and Less Than Zero, and as a charter member of Hollywood's Brat Pack. That iconic group of ingenues and heartthrobs has come to represent both a genre of film and an era of pop culture. In his memoir, McCarthy focuses his gaze on that singular moment in time. The result is a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom, reckoning with conflicted ambition, innocence, addiction, and masculinity.

I enjoyed it
Revisado: 07-07-23
I read through all the reviews as I collected my own thoughts about the book. It was sad to see that so many people misunderstood the story being told here. The title was a little misleading, but I know it was given that name to draw purchases.
In my opinion, the story was too shallow. By that I mean, the author skimmed over important points in his life, and there were other places that he could have gone much deeper. Instead, the story of the Andrew McCarthy feels very much the way the book was written.
He expresses that he is an introvert, and gives many instances of that throughout the book, but it’s like his comments were introverted too. He shared, but only enough to sell the book, not deep enough for us to understand what he genuinely felt about the incidents he recounted.
Still, well, I felt the book could have been deeper and more thoughtful, I understood that the book was about Andrews perspective on his life in the 80s end his career. I didn’t begin the book with the perception that this was going to be a telling of all the lives of the Brat Pack. It’s important to read the book from the perspective that it’s written, and not have preconceived ideas that ruin the story for you. I liked the book well enough to read another one that he wrote. I think that between this book and the Walking with Sam book, it tells a lot about the author and the way he thinks, and a bit about how he feels while still leaving enough mystery for him to have privacy.
Well done, Andrew McCarthy !

Historia
When Andrew McCarthy's eldest son began to take his first steps into adulthood, McCarthy found himself wishing time would slow down. Looking to create a more meaningful connection with Sam before he fled the nest, as well as recreate his own life-altering journey decades before, McCarthy decided the two of them should set out on a trek like few others: 500 miles across Spain's Camino de Santiago. Over the course of the journey, the pair traversed an unforgiving landscape, having more honest conversations in five weeks than they'd had in the preceding two decades.

Inspirational and relatable
Revisado: 06-14-23
I very much enjoyed this telling of the father-son journey across Spain. Hearing it in the author’s voice, and with his sons voice made the story so much more alive. Andrew McCarthy did a great job of a parent’s struggle with their newly adult child, and with their own mind when it comes to parenting choices.
This book appeals to all generations.

Whilst organising a mock murder hunt for the village fete hosted by Sir George and Lady Stubbs, a feeling of dread settles on the famous crime novelist Adriane Oliver. Call it instinct, but it's a feeling she just can't explain...or get away from. In desperation she summons her old friend, Hercule Poirot - and her instincts are soon proved correct when the "pretend" murder victim is discovered playing the scene for real, a rope wrapped tightly around her neck.

David Suchet is wonderful!
Revisado: 01-20-23
I have loved Agatha Christie’s stories since I was a little girl. I think David Suchet has played Hercule Perot so well. It was wonderful to hear him read this book and play out the characters.
