Historia
A desperate Kremlin takes advantage of a military crisis in Asia to simultaneously strike into Western Europe and invade east Africa in a bid to occupy three rare Earth mineral mines that will give Russia unprecedented control over the world's hi-tech sector for generations to come. Pitted against the Russians are a Marine lieutenant colonel pulled out of a cushy Pentagon job, a French Special Forces captain and his intelligence operative father, a young Polish partisan fighter, an A-10 Warthog pilot, and the commander of an American tank platoon....

Too much of a fantasy tale for me
Revisado: 04-17-24
The story seems more farfetched today than when it was written given the Russian military’s performance and resourses in their war of Ukraine.
Also, the story line has two +1,000 mile sequential journeys of armored units without transports. Can tracked vehicles be taken on a +1,000-mile road / off road journey? and arrive ready to fight?

Fair and Balanced
Revisado: 02-04-23
The audiobook was very entertaining as well as very informative. When the book delved into topics which I felt I have subject matter knowledge I found nothing that I could even quibble about.
Finally, I only give a 5 star rating about 10% of the book I listen to and didn’t expect to give a five star rating to this book. Before I started, I thought this would be a “preaching to the choir” book. I was wrong.

Historia
Jain was the lieutenant commander of an elite SEAL team. He was accustomed to order and discipline, which he used to give the men under his command that particular brand of killer instinct his unit was known for.But one day that semi-comfortable, ordered life ended when he opened his eyes to find his body replaced by a starship. His mind had become its AI core. He is somewhere in deep space. Most of his systems are badly damaged. He has no memory of how he got here, or what his mission is. Evidence points to an attack by an unknown entity.

Historia
A group of 27 scientists and explorers are stranded in Antarctica. Residing in a station known as Shackleton, they are studying the seismic activity of the region. An eruption of the nearby volcano, Mount Erebus, soon sends quakes throughout the continent with devastating results. All radio communication has been disabled by the breakdown of the magnetic field. Evacuation is unlikely. No one knows whether they survived the icequake, and their station is now moving two kilometres north each day with the strong aftershocks.

Historia
Pandemic, climate change, or war: Our era is ripe with the odor of doomsday. In movies, books, and more, our imaginations run wild with visions of dreadful, abandoned cities and returning to the land in a desperate attempt at survival. In The Next Apocalypse, archaeologist Chris Begley argues that we completely misunderstand how disaster works. Examining past collapses of civilizations, such as the Maya and Rome, he argues that these breakdowns are actually less about cataclysmic destruction than they are about long processes of change.

How about asking a wilderness survival instructor who is also an anthropologist and archaeologist? After listening to the audiobook I bought a hard copy. Perhaps a better format for a survival book

I kept hoping for an interesting story but it kept slipping back into a Hunger Games rerun with a hero who is quite lame. The two decent female characters take backseats as (unwanted) inspiration and help. Ending was disappointing. Hopefully this is not a series!

Worth the hours after embracing the characters from the first book. Great for long car trips, gardening, cooking, even sewing a binding on a large quilt. A fun intro sci-fi that would be entertaining for families, too. Will save to revisit in the future!

Historia
What can fossilized teeth tell us about our ancient life expectancy? What can big data on fossils reveal about farming's problematic role in human evolution? How can simple geometric comparisons of skull and pelvic fossils suggest an origin to our social nature? In Close Encounters with Humankind, paleoanthropologist Sang-Hee Lee explores some of our biggest evolutionary questions from unexpected new angles. Through a series of entertaining, bite-sized chapters, we gain new perspectives into our first hominin ancestors, our first steps on two feet, and more.

A different perspective of human ancestry
Revisado: 09-15-18
I was looking for a different perspective of human ancestry and I found it. However, I was also looking for up to date information. While this book was published in 2018 the book is a collection of essays that were previously published.
The book also supports a multi-regionalist model for modern humans, but without any attempt to fit this theory with recent genomic data. In the book the authors appeared to be less comfortable with genomic data, but this could just reflect their paleoanthropologist perspective.

Professor Theo Cray is trained to see patterns where others see chaos. So when mutilated bodies found deep in the Montana woods leave the cops searching blindly for clues, Theo sees something they missed. Something unnatural. Something only he can stop. As a computational biologist, Theo is more familiar with digital code and microbes than the dark arts of forensic sleuthing.

The main character lacked believability.
Revisado: 09-15-18
The main character is a computational biologist, and a lot of “science” details were part of the story. This is a thriller and I wasn’t looking for scientific accuracy, and I didn’t find it. But I did expect that the author would get the processes and descriptions of the biology, computational biology and DNA technology right.
