The story is great. The author shares amazing experiences and helps the reader understand what's required to learn about and support wolf populations. But I really wish Diane Boyd had read the book herself -- even if she isn't a professional narrator. The performer almost sounded like AI -- genuine emotional connection with the material was absent.

I love David Grann’s work, and this story is no exception. The actions of people and governments in history always provides insight on the present. I wish I had picked up a hard copy, though, instead of the audiobook. The narrator is too dramatic for my tastes. I powered through, however, simply because the story was interesting.

The story was ok. I might have liked it better if I had read it instead of listening to it. The upward tone of the reader at the end of each sentence was terribly distracting, and the French accents sometimes hard to understand.

The story was a moving one of war in Sierra Leone during the end of the 20th century. It was a difficult story to hear in parts as the tragedy of war is clearly evident, but Ishmael's escape from a seemingly hopeless situation is amazing. I wish the book included an epilogue that explained how he got to America. Also, the book was read by the author which definitely adds to the authenticity of the story, but his accent requires attentive listening.
