Historia
Hollywood Park is a remarkable memoir of a tumultuous life. Mikel Jollett was born into one of the country’s most infamous cults and subjected to a childhood filled with poverty, addiction, and emotional abuse. Yet, ultimately, his is a story of fierce love and family loyalty told in a raw, poetic voice that signals the emergence of a uniquely gifted writer.

WHAT is with the music?????
Revisado: 06-07-21
Just willy nilly... at the beginning... or end... or middle of a chapter, random music starts and then amps up. So when you're trying to hear about what a small child is thinking, rock music is blaring. It's so jarring. I wish people would stop trying to jazz up audiobooks.

Historia
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

I Wish Everyone Would Read
Revisado: 09-15-20
There's not a lot I think I can add here. I wanted to read this book for a long time, but didn't, because ... well, you know... great orators can be a bit daunting to take on in large doses. Listening to it read by Laurence Fishburne was divine. This book was simply amazing, and more down to earth than I imagined Malcolm X to be. We forget these big heroes weren't heroes at all; everyone is just people trying to figure out their way. He had so many insights into the human psyche.... Have you ever had conversations in your head with the people in your books? Every single thought I had, throughout the entire book, he ended up giving great insight, and a lot of times, a different view that I could understand and respect, even if I disagreed on this particular point or that. I wish everyone could read more books based on other people's lives. That's all a person needs to open his/her mind up.

Politics? Really?
Revisado: 08-11-20
I'm only on chapter 7, and there's been already been too many conversations about Donald Trump. WHY?!?! Why anyone would think that ANYONE wants to escape to a fantasy world where we still all sit around and gripe about American politics is beyond my wildest comprehension.
Edited....
Sadly I had to stop. When I heard the first book, I was delighted. I loved the descriptions of everything, loved most of the characters, though the two main characters had a lot of development to do.
From the start of listening to this one, I was put off. First, the obnoxious 30 minute chat conversation was so annoying that I had to skip through it. (I skipped through a book?!)
I don't know why females have to be written as so boringly dull. The whole "simple girl is actually an amazing hero who is meant to save the world" trope is now the new formula for female power. Ick. It is clear now that Erin is some sort of clueless amazing genius who is going to stumble onto saving everyone. She whines her way through her days, and can't figure out the basic necessities of life, but everyone eventually loves her because.... I don't know. She hasn't even figured out she has multiple bedrooms to sleep in, yet she's being built up as some kind of secret master strategist.
Rioka is an equally clueless b**** who believes she's better than every single entity she comes across. Every thought she has is either condescending towards someone she believes is below her... OR berating herself for being so condescending, when she's only going to do it again in a minute.
They repeat the same conversations over and over again, but never seem to accomplish much in the telling. There is a ridiculous amount of whining done from both main characters, which becomes grating after awhile. Also, the telling so far seems only balanced towards Rioka, and we haven't even heard Erin's POV yet. And the jarring and cringeworthy political diatribe was embarrassing to listen to.
I'm so bummed. I haven't been this excited/disappointed for a book in a long time.
Oh and Andrea Parsneau is AMAZING.

So touching
Revisado: 06-21-20
It's been a long time since I read it listened to a book that was so intimate and touching. I love Mike Birbilglia, and so as soon as I saw the title, I just got it without even looking at what it was about. It was lovely. I laughed and cried ...sometimes at the same time. I'm not the greatest wordsmith, but the whole time listening I was acutely aware of how personal this story was and I felt ...I don't know what the right word is... but almost grateful to be allowed to share in this little family's life story(so corny ugh but I don't have another way to put it).

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Disappointed
Revisado: 11-12-19
I'm so out of the loop, I didn't even realize this was coming out until it was here, so I was super pumped. Sadly, to me, it felt like a forced, formulaic ending to a story I have loved for decades for being anything but. I remember the first time ever reading The Handmaid's Tale. I was in high school (in a very poor, rural, backwoods town). I don't even know how I found such a thing in the first place. But when I read it, I was blown away by both the content, and they way that it left you with 2 thousand more questions than answers. This book made sure everything was tied up in a nice, shiny bow... which was extremely jarring to me.
Having said that... Ann Dowd... Oh I need to see/hear so much more of you!

It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. FUN!
Revisado: 11-12-19
Not going to give away anything, because I really was surprised at the way things ended, but I thought the whole thing was a fun adventure. This was the first time I actually stretched out the listen, because I knew I was going to be bummed once it was over. I liked that the characters had dimensions to them... they weren't all likable, and everyone had flaws. I can't wait for the next volume!

Just not a fan
Revisado: 05-06-18
Story was okay for awhile, then fell apart. The writing just wasn't there. Some of the dialogue made me cringe with awkwardness. The female narrator never had any real emotion in her telling, so it didn't help.
