Historia
Presley Carter is a bright, hungry young defense attorney plying her trade in the areas in and around Nashville. Though she’s haunted by a horrifying event from her past, she’s achieved local renown as a savvy, resourceful lawyer adept at handling–and winning–tough cases. After being approached to file a clemency petition by a father whose son committed a gruesome double-murder, Presley reluctantly agrees to file the document, knowing full well the request has no chance of being granted. Then she receives a phone call informing her the convict’s release has been approved.

Read Pratts other 5 star novels, not this one
Revisado: 12-17-22
Scott Pratt was an amazing author. His earlier books and series are 11/10. This book however does not feel like a Pratt thriller. I know he tragically passed in 2018, and I can’t help but wonder is someone else wrote or finished this book using some of his notes or a rough outline. The protagonist is a lawyer, but it’s obvious that whoever wrote this has zero knowledge of even the most basic law or procedure. She makes decisions I would put on par with a 16 year old girl, not a lawyer. This read, if you can get through it, requires a lot of suspend disbelief. Pratt’s other books are so much better that this one. I hope no one picks this up and decides not to give the rest of his work a chance based on this. Pratt’s legacy deserves better. Much better.

The first by Clark I couldn't get into
Revisado: 05-16-20
This was so disappointing. I've read every one of her series and have very much enjoyed all of them except this one. I tried for like 2 weeks but I ended up finally giving up with 2ish hours to go because I just didn't care. I didn't care about Nico or their relationship and the snappy dialogue started to get a little too cute at times. I love this series so i really don't understand where this went wrong.

Bad narration; unnecessary political mansplaining
Revisado: 03-27-20
Now that I’ve finished the book, I think I’ll have to drop it to two stars. First, the dialogue. Much of the time it’s overly formal, which is fine for the courtroom. But when people are talking to people they know well in casual situations, they have a tendency to use contractions and a more informal sentence structures. I’m getting the impression that all the characters are all overly stiff and I don’t think that was the author’s intent. It feels clumsy and unnatural. The narrator didn’t help. I was very choppy regardless of what speed I set it to playback.
I was also put off by the political commentary, and not because I disagree, but because it was unnecessary. The story in itself is enough. I’m betting the majority of the readers can get there own their own. So maybe tone down the mansplaining or author-splaining or whatever it’s called when the author doesn’t think the reader is smart enough to draw the intended conclusions on their own. It’s a huge pet peeve.

Historia
Cassie McDowell’s life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents’ strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she’s grown accustomed to them. All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale. One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed - violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who’s responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface.

This was a great book, I was hooked from the start. As far as people saying it ended too abruptly or left unanswered questions...the author wrote an epilogue that you can easily find and read online on her site. Highly recommended.

Surprisingly disappointing
Revisado: 01-06-20
I don’t remember the last time I read something of Mofina’s that wasn’t a 5 star read. So when I couldn’t bring myself to even finish this one, it was a huge surprise. I’m usually riveted and on the edge of my seat, but this one just isn’t even good. Literally, get any other book he’s written and you’re in for a treat.

Scary-crazy
Revisado: 08-25-19
Listening to this story was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. A cliche for sure (my description, not the book),but I really can’t think of a more fitting description. There was a constant sense of foreboding that kept getting more and more intense as the story went on. It gave me a bad feeling and I kept checking the time hoping the story would be over soon. Not that it was bad, but just because I wanted the feeling of dread to go away!

Not aging well
Revisado: 08-19-19
I like legal thrillers and have liked these book in the past, but I can’t stand things being told from Archers prospective. Moreover, I can’t believe a woman would write this way. Every woman he comes in to contact with he makes really insulting observations and judgments based on their appearance. Not to mention the thoughts he has about Hannah, the 16 year old girl.
He’s being portrayed as being so manly he can’t control his aggression, and the fact that this toddler-like lack of control is intended to make him more sexy and desirable to the reader, makes me a little bit sick. I’m usually not super sensitive to these types of issues, but for whatever reason, in this book it’s rubbing me the wrong way. Maybe because he’s supposed to be the good guy? I usually never skip books in a series, but this is the third time I’ve tried to read this one and the absurdity of Archer’s inner thoughts and voice are too much. I just can’t even.
