Historia
A secret buried in the Antarctic. A puzzle unsolved for thousands of years. And a Brooklyn-born master gunnery sergeant who's royally pissed that he has to babysit the researchers sent to figure it all out. But when Patrick "Wic" Finnegan finally sees what the team has uncovered, he can't believe his eyes, nor is he prepared for the violence to come. Soon, the portal opens and unleashes a storm of unbridled fury upon humanity.

Childish
Revisado: 04-14-24
This started out in an engaging way, but after the first hour or two, became a sludge of cliches. Stuffed full of pointless yammering, movie references and attempted humor, this is probably two or three times longer than it needs to be to tell its story. I regret this purchase.

Original and engaging
Revisado: 05-26-23
It was refreshing to have an original story, not a remix of overused tropes. From the first sentence to the hook ending, it held my attention. I was eager to get back to the story at every opportunity. I liked that the non-human characters were still people, relatable and nuanced. It left me wanting more, and I hope it’s left at that, not ridden into the ground as part of an unnecessary series.

Well written, succinct and well-performed. Made me nostalgic for the SF short stories in Omni magazine.

The sudden discovery of humans living on multiple planets beyond their own has created more questions than it’s answered. When humanity arrived on New Eden, a hideous new alien race, the Zodarks was discovered. In the face of an existential threat to their own survival, the historical warring factions of Earth will need to unite if they want to save themselves from extinction and understand the true origins on human history.

I am dumber for having heard this
Revisado: 05-03-23
I have questions about this title.
-who is the target reader? Youth? People with no exposure to SF or popular culture from 1994-2011?
-what is the editorial process for these books written for Audible? There WAS an editorial process for this, wasn't there?
-was this written by an algorithm? Some piece of software written to scrape other, better, well-received SF and TV into a blender and grind it into a textureless gruel?
The first book was childish pap but suitable for the long commute. It demanded nothing, gave nothing. This made me wince at how painfully unoriginal it was and how obviously it used other intellectual properties. Caveat emptor.

Disjointed and disappointing
Revisado: 01-19-23
I loved Children of Time.
I liked Children of Ruin.
I wanted to love this too but the story is just a confused mess. There’s a narrative reason why this should be so, but a) that doesn’t help it be any more readable, and b) that reason is so overused in science fiction by now that it is an insult to the originality of the previous books.

Taking the shuttle into orbit, they discover a much larger ship left adrift with no one on board. Recruiting from all over the world, they begin to expand their fleet and build a federation to give humans a foothold in the galaxy.

Off-Brand Fan Fiction
Revisado: 08-19-21
This really felt like the author really wanted to write an origin story for another famous SF franchise, but was unable to do so due to copyright restrictions.
The dialogue felt clunky and dated. It might have been acceptable in the past for men to make the big decisions while the girls make sandwiches, etc., but that dynamic seems out of place in a modern novel.
It was glaringly convenient that major characters have EXACTLY the skill sets required by the extreme and remarkable situations in which they find themselves.
Maybe this series matures as it goes on, but I won't spend another credit to find out.

A Solid Human Story in a Plausible Sci-fi Setting
Revisado: 10-22-20
With a believable main character, a strong crew of supporting characters, and an interesting and dynamic world, this was a quick read. And now that I’ve come to the end, I find I’m wanting more. Surely that’s a good sign.

Smart Fiction, and Fun

Historical events are just the tip of the iceberg; this well-written and excellently delivered story show us what may exist beneath those events. Expertly paced, and thoughtfully voiced, this one is hard to put aside.
