Way less informative than I may have liked. But this is perhaps because I’ve found I enjoy academic texts better.

Historia
Comedians Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld never thought anyone would watch their silly little sitcom about a New York comedian sitting around talking to his friends. NBC executives didn't think anyone would watch either, but they bought it anyway, hiding it away in the TV dead zone of summer. But against all odds, viewers began to watch, first a few and then many, until nine years later nearly 40 million Americans were tuning in weekly.

Jonathan Abernathy is a self-proclaimed loser . . . he’s behind on his debts, has no prospects, no friends, and no ambitions. But when a government loan forgiveness program offers him a literal dream job, he thinks he’s found his big break. If he can appear to be competent at his new job, entering the minds of middle-class workers while they sleep and removing the unsavory detritus of their waking lives from their unconscious, he might have a chance at a new life. As Abernathy finds his footing in this new role, reality and morality begin to warp around him.

Middling novel
Revisado: 03-03-24
I liked the performance and the way the book was written, but it sagged in the middle and had an uncomfortable ending. I think a lot of the ideas introduced in the novel are fascinating, but parts were rushed. This is a good idea with a lot to think about, but could have benefitted from being drafted 1-2 more times.

I think this is one of the most salient novels written about the post-Trump American condition and what it’s like to live under rapidly changing social norms. It also has some of the most contradictory characters in it in a way that would make GK Chesterton proud.

This book is really spectacular. A modern “DisneyWar” detailing the MCU’s rise and fall. I do hate how many obvious breaths the reader takes, though.

Useful book written by a traditional man
Revisado: 01-07-24
Lundy Bancroft has regressive views on male victims of abuse and trans women, but I believe this book is still a very useful book two decades later in helping anyone understand how abuse works on a larger scale despite these more old school views. Abuse as a pattern is a very useful framework to view it in a society that sees it as being a result of mental illness or backwards social views. I've known liberal AND conservative abusive men, and as a trans person it was usually liberal men doing it to me. I think it is helpful how Lundy Bancroft points out these truths, how abuse cuts across cultures, white and nonwhite, international and domestic, and impacts even gays and lesbians. Abuse is about power and there are ways to stop it, help others, and identify it. So as someone leaving an abusive relationship, I found this book life changing. I just wish it didn't focus so heavily on the gender dynamics, which feed into patriarchy even as he says that some men have misinterpreted mistreatment as abuse. But as someone abused by women, they often did the same things as the men in this book.
It is a classic but not without its flaws. It's outdated more than anything, but still applicable. Now, I am off to read his book on abusive parents. Sometimes the reader for this book is cringe.

Revisado: 01-21-23
Personally, I don’t really mind that the author sometimes involves himself or other people because it provides much needed context to the people. This is the most fair and balanced overview of this family and comprehensive history that basically I NEED A SEQUEL IF YOU’RE READING THIS. I seriously need another book because of the way Halperin writes about such trash nonsense in such an academic and journalistic way. This was a book that I read in two days.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Historia
For too long the Religious Right has masqueraded as a social movement preoccupied with a number of cultural issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage. In her deeply reported investigation, Katherine Stewart reveals a disturbing truth: this is a political movement that seeks to gain power and to impose its vision on all of society. America’s religious nationalists aren’t just fighting a culture war, they are waging a political war on the norms and institutions of American democracy.

Terrible narration, great book
Revisado: 12-07-21
Seems as if the editor really rushed her as many words are edited in due to her mispronunciation. The story is great but the performance is so distracting that I’m just going to get this book in print if I need to read it again.
