Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

This made me cry. Such an epic novel. Loved it. It sparked in me a new fascination in horses, and their trainers, riders, the history. I love how books make me want to research the subjects further. I loved how she intertwined modern characters, modern social issues, with the equestrian world of the South pre-Civil War. Such a great book. I enjoyed the audio book, the narration was excellent.

Historia
Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumour, and wit. Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is retired. He’s had a career and a single marriage, a calm divorce. He’s certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove.

This was very good. Great narration. It makes you question everything: truth, other people’s truth and memories, your own memories. There’s a lot to think about after reading this.
