Historia
In the fall of 1863, the Union army is in control of the Mississippi river. Much of Louisiana, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is occupied. The Confederate army is in disarray, corrupt structures are falling apart, and enslaved men and women are beginning to glimpse freedom. When Hannah Laveau, a formerly enslaved woman working on the Lufkin plantation, is accused of murder, she goes on the run with Florence Milton, an abolitionist schoolteacher, dodging the local constable and the slavecatchers that prowl the bayous.

Storytelling At Its Best!
Revisado: 04-22-25
I agree this is James Lee Burke's best work to date. The characters are fully developed allowing you total involvement in the story. The writing and storytelling exquisite, the performances superb. Pierre Couchon is my absolute favorite. With a clear eye Pierre sees that he is stuck in the absurdity of racism, class, and war. He calls it out for what it truly was, and is. The performers' resonant, distinct, voices wonderfully draw out the nuances of anger, longing and humor from each protagonist. Burke's excellent knowledge of history blended with his natural flare for storytelling fuels this intense, enjoyable audiobook.

Romance can be a little complicated when you get sucked into a wormhole. Just ask high school English teacher June Flint. One little solar flare happens and suddenly you find yourself 85 years in the future. Eighty-five years from your dream job. Your ailing mother whose only companion in this world is you. Your favorite stuffed-crust pizza from DeLucia’s on Sunday nights. But when June’s cell phone inexplicably picks up a signal, she’s able to call back to the present—more specifically, four weeks before she accidentally time traveled.

Funny, engaging, heart warming, and speaks to the fact that having a clear moral compass truly makes you a winner. Why? Because you are at peace with yourself, and open to life's possibilities!

Historia
Hours after rejecting the Corrowa People’s native title claim on Brisbane’s Meston Park, Justice Bruce Brosnan is brutally murdered in his home. Days later, lawyers against the claim are also found dead. Aboriginal people were once prohibited from entering Brisbane’s city limits at night, and Meston Park stood on the boundary. The Corrowa’s matriarch, Ethel Cobb, is convinced the murders are the work of an ancient assassin who has returned to destroy the boundary, but Aboriginal lawyer Miranda Eversely isn't so sure.

Historia
1812. In Bath and London, Jane Austen's characters are attending balls, and the Bridgerton family are making waves in Regency high society. But these are the grimy streets of Liverpool: a city where the extreme wealth of international commerce meets brothels and brawls, smugglers and secrecy; where both high and low society operate amidst revolutionary rumblings from France and the shadow of the recently abolished slave trade.

Ok

Background sound drowns out the voices at times, sound of the ocean and birds overly loud. The storyline at times implausible though the twist and turns kept my interest thru to the end.

This is the oral history of so many of our families; their faith, integrity, resilience, fortitude, humor, and the blurred color line that maps out our lives. The essence of our shared history masterfully weaved into "The Land" by this magnificent storyteller. Thank You!

A growing resistance movement is active, angry, and looking to strike back. And a TV show for kids may be the key. Enter Celeste Montgomery and Bailey Vance. Celeste is an intern for the show that features Bailey singing and dancing with puppets. While Bailey teaches the kids about geography, Celeste is planting codes into the script, songs, background, whatever she can do to pass messages for the resistance.

Pain
Revisado: 01-17-23
A story full of secrets, pain, loss, that leaves you as raw as the family it portrays. No happy ending, just slight uplifts as life often is. Painful in its truism.

Enjoyed
Revisado: 01-02-23
A good story line and the characters well developed but I did find my mind wondering because the protagonist is too wordy. I kept hoping she would follow her best friend's example who ("With quick efficient words Nell explained")
The author is a good writer and I will read her books in the future. But I hope she will allow her editor to make those necessary heart wrenching cuts. The words of Martin Luther ring true "The fewer the words, the better the prayer."

Solid
Revisado: 11-28-22
If you want to understand today you have to search yesterday.”
Pearl S. Buck, American novelist (1892-1973)
In places it was cheezie, but as the mystery played out it took twist and turns you weren't expecting and surprises that opened more questions than answers, which always lays the groundwork for great storytelling.
History is messy and not for the faint of heart; for those not up to it "brainwashing" is an easy out. It takes true courage for the long held "winners" of history to face, acknowledge, and enter a truthful dialogue about it. To those up for the challenge, you got this!
