Ideas & content have some merit but his supercilious writing style & narration makes my skin crawl. If you already think the author is the final authority on legit spiritual matters then this is the book for you. If however you don’t grant that he is the Arbiter of Truth you may wish to look elsewhere.

A rich story about the life of the mind at a certain moment in human history. A neurodivergent & brilliant protagonist who deeply touched me. I will remember this story for a long time.

Transformative book

This book has already changed my love life forever. And bonus: Adam Bauer has a wonderful voice. Usually Audible makes terrible choices in selecting voice actors for spiritual books. But this was produced by Inner Traditions NOT Audible, so the choice of voice actor is amazing and actually enhances the experience.
I will listen to this again as soon as I finish listening to all of Diana Richardson’s other audio books.

Important information, annoying narrator

The information in this book is helpful and updates some hoary cultural beliefs about addiction that are badly in need of an update. However I find it ironic that even as the author addresses people with sensory sensitivities who are easily over-stimulated, arguing that this can predispose to addiction, Audible chose a voice narrator with such an annoying voice to read this book. Listen to a sample before you buy to make sure you can tolerate her vocal mannerisms... Get it together, Audible!

Lyrical passages by Allen Ginsberg

The opening editor’s introduction is dry & academic, relating the history of this manuscript. I listened to the whole thing but it’s only for literary nerds. Feel free to skip it. The performances are a cut above, Luis Moreno & Mark Nelson both outstanding. And the Allen Ginsberg passages are lyrical spiritual passages about ineffable ayahuasca journeys, which are experiences that primarily occur outside of the realm of language. Which make Allen Ginsberg’s poetry all the more affecting.

This is a balanced and thorough orientation, useful for anyone contemplating a Medicine ceremony. The author is an experienced and articulate shaman with broad experiences & I found his content useful & trustworthy.

Affected narrator with artificially high pitched voice

I am really disappointed by Audible’s casting of this narrator to read this book. I am very interested in the book and respect the writer but the voice actress is SO INTOLERABLY AFFECTED that I just can’t do it. She has an artificially high pitch, clichéd interpretations and heavy breathing and after a few hours of trying I am going to put this down. This happens way too often with Audible and is a real bummer. If you’re thinking of buying this on audio listen to a sample first since you might want to read (not listen) to this one. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
