Historia
It’s 1971. Trash piles up on the streets, crime is at an all-time high, the city is careening towards bankruptcy, and a shooting war has broken out between the NYPD and the Black Liberation Army. Amidst this collective nervous breakdown furniture store owner and ex-fence Ray Carney tries to keep his head down and his business thriving. His days moving stolen goods around the city are over. It’s strictly the straight-and-narrow for him—until he needs Jackson 5 tickets for his daughter May and he decides to hit up his old police contact Munson, fixer extraordinaire.

Almost as good as Harlem Shuffle
Revisado: 01-18-24
Overall this was excellent. However, since it’s by the same author about the same characters at a later time in life, I can’t help comparing it to Harlem Shuffle, which was definitely better.

Historia
Jennifer Egan’s spellbinding interlocking narratives circle the lives of Bennie Salazar, an aging former punk rocker and record executive, and Sasha, the passionate, troubled young woman he employs. Although Bennie and Sasha never discover each other’s pasts, the listener does, in intimate detail, along with the secret lives of a host of other characters whose paths intersect with theirs, over many years, in locales as varied as New York, San Francisco, Naples, and Africa.

A lot of characters and mini-subplots
Revisado: 01-18-24
Many parts were interesting and thought-provoking, but there were too many characters and mini-plots for me to really keep track of.
I listen during long drives once or twice a week. Maybe if I listened straight through while not driving it would have been easier to follow.

Historia
The Candy House opens with the staggeringly brilliant Bix Bouton, whose company, Mandala, is so successful that he is “one of those tech demi-gods with whom we’re all on a first name basis.” Bix is forty, with four kids, restless, and desperate for a new idea, when he stumbles into a conversation group, mostly Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with downloading or “externalizing” memory. Within a decade, Bix’s new technology, “Own Your Unconscious”—which allows you access to every memory you’ve ever had, and to share your memories in exchange for access to the memories of others—has seduced multitudes.

Very Convoluted
Revisado: 01-18-24
There were too many characters and mini-plots and references to people and events from Goon Squad for me to really keep track of.
I would probably need to listen to Goon Squad and then this all over again to fully appreciate what was going on.

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

Really liked this story and the narrator.
Revisado: 07-28-23
The narrator was excellent.
The story was gripping.
The characters are very engaging and entertaining. Most of the characters come and go. They might appear for only a few chapters. Many of these impermanent characters are well-developed though. Only the protagonist is both constant and well-developed.

I remember when all this was in the news, yet there’s still so much I didn’t know. This was really gripping, edge-of-your-seat listening.

Historia
Divorced from his own wife and carrying on halfheartedly with another man's, saddled with a bum knee and friends who make enemies redundant, Sully now has one new problem to cope with: a long-estranged son who is in imminent danger of following in his father's footsteps. With its uproarious humor and a heart that embraces humanity's follies as well as its triumphs, Nobody's Fool, from Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Richard Russo, is storytelling at its most generous. Nobody’s Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Jessica Tandy, and Melody Griffith.

I've always liked Richard Russo's books. This is yet another good one. The narrator is fantastic--he does all voices and characters wonderfully.

Very funny yet action-packed
Revisado: 02-04-17
Imagine the violence, action and suspense of Breaking Bad combined with the comic character interactions of a Marx Brothers movie.
The narrator is excellent. He renders each character's voice and personality wonderfully.
