Historia
Heartfelt, powerfully engaging, and in the tradition of Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See, this is a work of storytelling bravado: a thrilling action-packed art heist, an imaginative chronicle of forgotten history, and a poignant coming-of-age epic where a child navigates one of the most morally complex fronts of World War II and lives to tell the tale.

Hard to swallow
Revisado: 10-21-24
I really want to dislike this book. We the reader are implicitly asked to treat scenarios as ethically ambiguous where no such ambiguity exists. What you have here is the story of an orphan with dissociative identity disorder being groomed by a murdering psychopath. The ends justify the means? Nah. The author is quite weak on historical detail and this pokes through suspension of disbelief in odd places; casually applying lipstick in Italy in 1944? Hmmmm. The narrative tempo is effective at maintaining reader engagement and the inevitable rug-pull (ha HA I bet you found these characters relatable and now they're DEAD!) is predictable but impactful nonetheless. I was skeptical of the protagonists dysmorphia/DID as a narrative device but the author manages to massage it into literary effectiveness before the end. Gabra Zackman gives a spectacular performance as usual and maybe that's just enough to carry the work. Will I be reading more by Derek B. Miller? Never.

Historia
John Boyd may be the most remarkable unsung hero in all of American military history. Some remember him as the greatest US fighter pilot ever - the man who, in simulated air-to-air combat, defeated every challenger in less than 40 seconds. Some recall him as the father of our country's most legendary fighter aircraft - the F-15 and F-16. Still, others think of Boyd as the most influential military theorist since Sun Tzu. They know only half the story.

More hyperbole than substance.
Revisado: 05-17-24
More hyperbole than substance and more "digestible" than insightful. Not much use as a historical document except perhaps as a jumping-off point towards building or expanding a reading list.

Historia
Sailing, Yachts and Yarns is a selection of Tom Cunliffe’s funniest, wisest and most thought-provoking writing from the pages of Yachting Monthly. Tom’s love of language and sense of humour shine through as he recalls the wealth of sinners and saints he has met on docksides from Southampton to South America, Greenwich to Greenland and Newtown to New York. He has a gift for capturing the magic of sail and finding pearls of practical wisdom in the most unlikely nautical adventures.

Unfortunately nowhere near as good a listen as "Sailing a Serious Ocean." Little more than soapbox ranting by a hopelessly tonedeaf, solipsistic luddite.

Historia
The Lords of Creation rule the Nine Worlds through its control of the ultra-advanced technology that has permitted the colonization of the entire solar System. More gods than men, the Lords of Creation have cheated Death itself. But although they rule the solar system with their god-like scientific knowledge, there are even more powerful forces to be feared lurking out in the dark depths of space. And when an unthinkably terrible enemy that rules a vast network of dead stars and planets comes to the Nine Worlds, it falls to them to stop it, though entire worlds may perish.

Not for everyone.
Revisado: 09-09-22
John C Wright has quite a collection of axes and they all get a fine grind. If right-wing ideas frighten or offend you, probably skip this one. If you are a flexible thinker and choose to suspend your disbelief you are in for a big, fun, goofy traipse through ideaspace in the footsteps of Niven & A.E. Van Vogt.
Vocal performance a bit idiosyncratic. Takes a while to warm up, but pretty good overall.

Deadpan comedy at its finest!
Revisado: 04-27-22
Haven't laughed so hard in years. The author perfectly parodies a tone-deaf, technically and ethically illiterate cold war-era catspaw of the military industrial complex. Just the sort of character that would have played a supporting villain in a 90s film.

The Pilot is in love with fighter planes, a beautiful woman, and Paris. He must choose one of the three. One choice would betray the woman he can't resist, who may be a spy or someone much more. The Pilot has mastered many fighters, from the treacherous Sopwith Camel to the stiletto F-104 Starfighter, from the Spitfire to the F-16 Viper. But this challenge is different. He can't shoot down the future, but the past may hold the key to his present.

Historia
Sure to rank as one of the greatest aviation memoirs ever written, Viper Pilot is an Air Force legend's thrilling eyewitness account of modern air warfare. From 1986 to 2006, Lt. Col. Dan Hampton was a leading member of the Wild Weasels, the elite Air Force fighter squadrons whose mission is recognized as the most dangerous job in modern air combat. Weasels are the first planes sent into a war zone, flying deep behind enemy lines purposely seeking to draw fire from surface-to-air missiles and artillery. They must skillfully evade being shot down - and then return to destroy the threats, thereby making the skies safe for everyone else to follow.

Not interesting unless you are very specifically looking for information about the weapons and tactics employed by the US Air Force in the air campaign against Iraq. The airmen who developed and made use of these weapons and tactics in the 2nd Gulf War were SO successful against Iraqi air defenses that, by a wide margin, the single most hazardous anecdote in this book relates to a sandstorm.

It's Alright
Revisado: 09-30-20
Smart prose that gradually unveils itself as a sort of inverted harem fantasy. The political elements are well considered but a bit of a bait-and-switch from the core relationship issues that really drive this series. In short we have a cop out from a writer who is capable of better.
