Hmmm...
Revisado: 07-09-24
Well, I've now listened to the first three books in the series, and with each successive one, I have begun to be less and less entertained. Tabitha is smart and independent, except that her interactions with the dowager make me think not so much. I'm okay with the slow development of the romance between Tabitha and Wolf -- after all, Tabitha's marriage was a disaster, so it's natural that she would be cautious. The dowager, however, is a bully -- especially toward Tabitha -- and I find her completely unlikeable. In the first novel, her behavior was sort of humorous, but the way that Tabitha and Wolf are always bowing to her demands is now rather annoying. I realize it is so that they can keep her out of their way, but really?! Is she that necessary to the plot? I'd like to see less of her in the future, but in looking at the next few books I see that she figures pretty strongly. Ugh. Vicki-Jo Eva does a fine job with the narration, but listening to the voice for the Dowager Countess of Pembroke makes her even more unlikeable for me. I'd really like to read the rest of the books (they aren't yet on Audible) so that I can see how things work out for the two main characters, but I'm pretty sure that I will put them on the bottom of my TBR pile.

Short but not too sweet!

Such a great series! I binged seasons 1&2 together. The short series of murder mysteries were infused with just the right amount of intelligent humor. And the performances were great — I also enjoyed the holiday references. Can’t believe we have to wait a whole year for the next “chapter!!”

Few writers today have reshaped our view of the ancient Greek myths more than revered bestselling author Natalie Haynes. Divine Might is a female-centered look at Olympus and the Furies, focusing on the goddesses whose prowess, passions, jealousies, and desires rival those of their male kin.

History with humor
Revisado: 01-04-24
Loved this latest from Natalie Haynes. She writes intelligently, interestingly and with humor. I have always loved reading mythology and studying the ancient history that created it. Women have been victimized, abused or belittled throughout history, despite being an integral part of it. Ms. Haynes does a fantastic job of recognizing this and bringing women into the conversation! I always enjoy reading her books, and her narration is always great to listen to as she, of course, knows her text well, and she brings plenty of expression to its presentation! If you love mythology and ancient history, this book is worth a listen.

Creepy Good!
Revisado: 10-16-23
I have just finished the 5th entry in the Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper series. So far, I have enjoyed each story in the series with each coterie of creepy ghosts. J.L. Bryan writes an interesting storyline with each individual history about ghosts in each of these stories, and I had my curiosity piqued enough to go on to the next -- despite not being that enamored of the narrator. Ms. Mercer-Meyer does a decent job most of the time, but I have two complaints: the titular character, Ellie, is, I understand from her own voice, supposed to be a native of Savannah, but she sounds more like she's from the west coast. And why is poor Stacey given that annoying voice that makes her sound like she's a fluffball, instead of the equally intelligent female that she is? But since listening to books allows me to multitask, I'll keep listening!

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

Revisado: 10-09-23
Having never read — or listened to — Nathan Lowell, I was pleasantly surprised at this novel. In fact, I had to listen to it again immediately after I finished it the first time! The story was interesting with likable main characters and an antagonist who was just perfectly detestable. I loved how Mulligan found solace and pride in his work. And Tom Taylorson did a fantastic job narrating the story! I hope this really is the beginning of a series — I will look forward to the continuing adventures of the wizard’s butler!

When Anna wakes up from a coma after a car crash, she discovers life has gone on without her. Her husband has been unfaithful - with her best friend - and she’s been long since replaced at work. While her old life is a distant memory, her new life feels like an empty shell. Then she meets the stranger who saved her life during the crash, and he changes everything. Leif Larsen - tattooist, joker, and player - has his own scars thanks to the crash that put Anna in a coma. Helping her move on from her failed marriage, and create a new life, sounds like a perfect distraction.

More Kate and Curran Fun!
Revisado: 07-11-23
Yes, I picked up the books when they came out and read them happily. So glad Kate and Curran are back to play for a bit—let the snark begin! As usual, Ilona Andrews has produced a pair of stories with enough problems to solve, exciting (and violent!) action and entertaining characters (both old and new!) to while away an afternoon. I loved them! The audio was a bit of a change with different narration, but both Hillary Huber and Michael Glenn were great taking up The story from Kate and Curran’s viewpoints. I sometimes have issues with that only because you can get repetition, but both characters can be so funny that you deal. This pair of shorts were great fun, and I hope we get more! Thanks for bringing back some of my favorite book people, IA!!

Not sure I liked this book — although I did finish it. The main character’s morally ambiguous outlook and her addiction as a coping method did not make her very likable to me. However, because I do enjoy urban fantasy, I found the storyline and characters interesting. I’ve read a few of Stacia Kane’s other books, so I do like the author’s humor and writing style. And of course, Ms. Turpin did a great job with the narration!

Tedious at times, but still enjoyable...
Revisado: 12-05-22
I like this series -- I LOVE cozies as a genre and figuring out whodunnit! -- but I have to agree with other reviews which state how annoying the main character, Holly, can be. I'm all for the humor, the misdirection and the kookie characters. Cozies are all about the main character who usually employs intelligence and common sense to figure out who the murderer is ahead of the law. Holly shows intelligence, but her lack of common sense at times, is so annoying that I often find myself wanting to smack her. I get that the story demands that the main character make some crazy choices to further the plot, but when it happens repeatedly, it can become quite tedious. I do enjoy the scenes of the activities at the Christmas Tree Farm, which are charming and amusing. The narrator, Allyson Ryan, is great -- the character voices seem to be on point and expressive -- except for the Boston accents. I'm going to finish the series, because cozies are a fun alternative from the darker violence of my favorite crime novels. And in spite of the main character, I can still appreciate Ms. Frost's creativity.

The vampire Wulfe is missing. Since he’s deadly, possibly insane, and his current idea of “fun” is stalking me, some may see it as no great loss. As alive as a vampire can be, anyway.

Worth the Wait!
Revisado: 08-25-22
Another great story in the Mercyverse! Ms. Briggs has managed to give her readers more suspense, more insight into the werewolf and vampire lore and more obscure references to scary fairytales (that I always have to look up)! It was definitely worth the wait! Lorelei King, the narrator of the audio version, always does such a stellar job--she hits the comic in the serious, emphasizes where emphasis is needed, and the various voices for the characters are easily discernible within the story and across the different novels!! And I'll echo another reviewer who said that Ms. King has become the voice of Mercy. I also wanted to address the reviews that I've read where someone has said that Mercy doesn't seem to have much self-confidence and always has to turn to Adam for comfort. I would point out that if she didn't have self-confidence -- and confidence in her people -- she wouldn't take on the big bads that make life in the Tri-Cities difficult. And relying on one's partner, pack, friends and allies is just smart, not a lack of confidence. Yes, she's afraid. Who wouldn't be when tangling with immortal monsters? Another writer said that the definition of courage is mastery of fear, not lack of it. And that's Mercy -- even Wulfe, who she admits is the scariest vampire she knows, can expect her aid. Is Mercy a "bad ass" heroine? Well, she keeps putting herself between the monsters and the humans, doesn't she? And okay, I have to admit to just a little head shaking at the cliff-hanger ending. But hey, isn't that what can happen when you're reading a series? As long as Ms. Briggs keeps writing, I'll keep reading. I am looking forward to the next adventure of the Columbia Basin pack!!
