Historia
Maria Florkowska is many things: daughter, avid chess player, and, as a member of the Polish underground resistance in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, a young woman brave beyond her years. Captured by the Gestapo, she is imprisoned in Auschwitz, but while her family is sent to their deaths, she is spared. Realizing her ability to play chess, the sadistic camp deputy, Karl Fritzsch, decides to use her as a chess opponent to entertain the camp guards. However, once he tires of exploiting her skills, he has every intention of killing her.

Fairy Tale
Revisado: 03-11-25
The story was only made better by the narrator. Lack luster events and characters. Everything came out wonderfully in the end...EVERYTHING! Almost as though it were a "magical" fairy tale. Not reality. If you're looking for a sappy, alls well that ends well, conclusion this is a book for you. I've read over a thousand novels from this genre/era and have to say this one almost put me to sleep each time I listened. Just found it a bit Ho-hum!

Different take on the same
Revisado: 03-01-25
The story kept me intrigued and entertained. I won't say this was a story that kept me wanting to stop everything and listen to my book. But, it was a story that kept me interested. I can't give the narrator a high mark because her cadence and inflection was so overly dramatic. Or at least emphasizing drama, which was inappropriate at so many times. I got used to it and and so was able to finish the book. Overall, I'd wait for a sale, I wouldn't use his credit.

Marvelous story with wonderful characters. The narrator was absolute perfection assigning her varied accents to each character with skill! My favorite part was the ending...came away feeling extra happy at the outcome for everyone! Delightful and highly recommend!

1876. In the glittering world of Manhattan's upper crust, women are valued by their pedigree, dowry, and, most importantly, connections. They have few rights and even less independence - what they do have is society. The more celebrated the hostess, the more powerful the woman. And none is more powerful than Caroline Astor - the Mrs. Astor.

Blasé to say the least
Revisado: 11-20-24
Was like a long, long "story hour"! Narrators were amazing but didn't help the dragging, oftentimes boring, storylines. Overall, a pleasant book but did not keep me coming back. Days would go by without a listen. I got through it...

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!
Revisado: 11-01-24
WOW! Was completely blown away with the whole story line! I pride myself, without bragging, in figuring out the "who done it" way before the ending. Well, this book was not quite a "who done it" but more a "how it was done"! Very concise planning, strategic in the timeline, and a great conclusion! The storyline did take a bit to form and was also a little confusing in the beginning. But, I persevered and carried on...then, BOOM, there it was the proverbial "hook"! So, so glad I hung in! Highly recommend for you thriller, mystery buffs who want a little something different!

Narration is very important
Revisado: 10-25-24
Authors should leave the narration of their works to the professionals. It's difficult to venture into a story line when the poor narration consumes your concentration.

Interesting era
Revisado: 09-05-24
The story flowed, kept my interest, was fully and well researched, and narrator did an excellent job. May drag a bit for those not 100% interested in this time period in Hollywood. But, may still find interesting.

It was great...until it wasn't!
Revisado: 08-28-24
Story was very interesting until the marriage. Then every chapter after was dragged out, melodramatic to nauseum, and repetitive. I increased the speed just to get through it. Certainly did not need to be this long. Very flowery prose in places that didn't jive with the scene at hand. I just think it could have used a strong editor's hand! Thank goodness I got in for BOGO!

Brian Lewis, an intern for Mahoney, has been found dead, seemingly from a drug overdose. OK...kept my interest some. Narrator used same gravely voice for majority of characters; adding a Bostonian accent once in a while. I did find some of the content eerily similar to Trump and his alleged (& convicted) crimes regarding financing, DC, etc. All in all grateful I got the book on sale and saved a credit!
