Historia
Confederate general Thomas Jonathan Jackson had been a virtual unknown upon his arrival at the front line of First Bull Run, but by the spring of 1862, thanks to his actions at that battle, "Stonewall" was already becoming known across the battlefields. Ultimately, it would be the Valley Campaign of 1862 that made him a legend. In the early months of 1862, Jackson was given command of an army numbering about 17,000 in the Shenandoah Valley.

Why Read so Fast?

The story was OK, but I have a big problem with the narrator. It just seemed like he was in a hurry to finish. Why go so fast? I guess that would be OK for a novel, but not for a Civil War campaign book. It takes away from the experience when the reader goes too fast. I have noticed this in several other audiobooks as well.

Historia
The Battle of Shiloh was fought along the Tennessee River near the border with Mississippi when the Confederates attempted to prevent the Union forces, who were led by future US president Ulysses S. Grant, from seizing the vital railroad junction at Corinth, Mississippi. The battle began in the early light of April 6, 1862, when Union scouts were surprised and stunned by the sight of over 9,000 Confederate troops heading straight for them.

I enjoyed this audiobook for the most part. My one complaint would be that I felt that they spent way too much time on basic Civil War stuff, and should have spent most of the time discussing the battle itself.

Historia
Early in May 1861, 21-year-old Sam R. Watkins of Columbia, Tennessee, joined the First Tennessee Regiment. He fought in all of its major battles, from Shiloh to Nashville. Twenty years later, with a "house full of young 'rebels' clustering around my knees and bumping about my elbows," he wrote the remarkable account of "Co. Aytch," its common foot soldiers, its commanders, its Yankee enemies, its victories and defeats, and its ultimate surrender on April 26, 1865.

My First Civil War Memoir

This memoir is well worth reading. I read this 30 years ago, and just finished rereading it. Excellent, touching, and chilling.

Unforgettable
Revisado: 01-26-21
Listening to this memoir was quite an experience for me, even as a student of military history. Not being a combat veteran myself, it was a very eye-opening revelation. I have a newfound respect for those poor men who had to endure such hardships and danger. Sledge writes with such honesty and openness, and makes no attempt to sugarcoat anything. The sense of danger and terror is real. This was not an easy book to listen to. But I highly recommend it. God bless Eugene Sledge and all his fellow Marines who sacrificed so much for our country.
