A Most Excellent Standalone

A.L. Knorr is a fantastic author. I listened to A Star of Darkness. This standalone ran me through a myriad of emotions. Though I know there are world building aspects that I would get if I read the rest of the Scented Court series, I didn't feel like anything was missing. It is a thoroughly enjoyable listen. The narrator's did an amazing job of bringing these characters to life. The rest of The Scented Court series has been bumped to the top of my TBR list.

It had promise

The premise had promise and was what made me want to read this story. However, the farther I got into it, the less I enjoyed it. The pacing wasn't right for this short of a story. parts of it felt too rushed. I am not a big fan of the narrator, either. The accents chosen and the way he voiced female characters made me dislike those characters. My biggest problem was how disjointed the end felt. It might make more sense if I were reading it instead of listening but the scenes jump around between recent past and present so much, without any cues, that I couldn't figure a cohesive timeline to the events.

Cute short Christmas romances

These are four very heartwarming Christmas stories that all have something to do with one of my very favorite places on the planet. They all have a Hallmark movie feel about them. These are perfect light romances for the holidays. The narrator does a good job with all four stories.

Great Addition to the Reckoners

While you can definitely tell this isn't just Sanderson working in this, the story fits well within the Reckoners universe. At times it feels a little more brutal than the original series, but it's never without cause. The characters are wonderful and the story compelling. Hoping there will be another.

Reads like a historical manga

This is a really interesting story. It reminds me a lot of several manga I have read that deal with youkai. The plot development is great. In fact, this would make a beautiful graphic novel. While I love the interactions between the MCs, I struggle with the FMC's voice. For a historical setting, her speech is too informal and flippant. That's really picky, but it did take me out of the story a bit.

First Time Dramatization

I wasn't certain about listening to a Dramatization but this was a perfect one to start with! The story was adorable and the chemistry was so sweet. Definitely a fantastic listen.

Fantastically Entertaining

Another fabulous entry in this series. Lots of twists and turns that had me guessing until the end. Anxiety and heartbreak abound as well.

Just another quick gush for Ms. Knorr. With all the storylines and characters that have been created in this universe, it would be terribly easy to make each series a little formulaic. Thankfully, that is never the case. Each character's arc is its own. Each is colored with the flavor unique to the MC. It's a joy to listen to.

Great second in a series

Great continuation of the series. Ryan makes a perfectly despicable antagonist. I have wanted to slap Gage several times as he keeps believing only good about his brother. Saxony's character development is fantastic.

The narrator is not my favorite. There were some vocal choices that annoyed me but didn't make it unlistenable.

Interesting alternate earth

I didn't expect to get sucked into this world as thoroughly and as quickly as I did. The story mostly focuses on the relationships rather than the magic system, which I enjoy. The interaction between the two MCs is really interesting and heartwarming. Mostly, this is a story about a girl who had been sexually assaulted coming to grips with the idea that she still has worth after the fact. It was a great listen.

The narrator did an ok job. She was fairly monotone throughout and didn't show a great range of emotion but it worked.

Good continuation

While this was still enjoyable, I find myself liking Riley and Garrett more than Ember. Her character seems to be a bit inconsistent. Enough so that it is starting to annoy me. But the male characters are enough to keep me going.

The narrators, all four of them, do a fantastic job.
