Unexpected Delight!

This was my first Nicola Rendell read/listen and i was so pleasantly surprised by this story! This book is RomCom meets kinky, sweet & dirty, cute & erotic. Both main characters, Russ & Penny are easy to love and the supporting cast (a small town full of flamingo-loving, quirky Floridians including a yogi best friend who does daily happy hour yoga and an enormous, grumpy horse/dog named Guppy) add so much color to this adorable story.

But don’t let all this cuteness fool you - this story is HOT! The sex is off the charts at times and sweet at others. Penny & Russ’s explosive chemistry is so well-written. Russ is a dirty-talking, dominant, alpha male with a super sweet and caring bent that made me swoon.

Why the 4 stars on the narrators? These two narrators are both talented but there was something lacking in their reading of the steamy bits. The narration just doesn’t match the intense, earth-shattering words and actions written on the page. By no means do they ruin the story, they just fall flat at times.

Feels incomplete without the rest of the series

While I liked this book and see the potential in the story, it felt like I was missing some critical information that was covered in previous books in the series. As the other books in this series are not on Audible, I most likely will not read them.

I would love to hear more Shana Galen books on Audible with good narration, like the Covent Garden Cubs series narrated by Beverly A. Crick! Lucy Rivers butchers the Sapphire series, proving that a narrator can make or break a book. Heather Wilds is okay, but her voice, strange cadence and (mis)pronunciations are taxing after several hours of listening.

Overall, an okay but incomplete story - more well-narrated Shana Galen audiobooks please!

I had no idea that Shayla Black wrote historical romance until I stumbled across this audiobook - I loved it! My only regret is that the rest of this series is not yet on Audible so I am (im)patiently waiting for the continuation :)

This book is set near the end of the War of the Roses and Aric Neville, famed Yorkist warrior and cousin to Queen Anne, has become disillusioned with the constant fighting, politics and bloodshed. Gwenyth is a saucy, beautiful, spoiled and stubborn yet hilarious character who is both irritating and loveable. As I came to understand her character (and her lamentable circumstances brought on by her cruel family) I was charmed by her creative insults, her refusal to be silenced, and her compassionate nature.

Shelley Bradley (a.k.a. Shayla Black) weaves a Phillipa-Gregory-meets-Sylvia-Day tale with skill, humor and sensuality. Tim Campbell is talented as ever in his narration of His Lady Bride. There is some explicit sex in the book but by no means does it take over the story-line. A well-written, sexy, medieval tale of love, politics, war, family, and duty. Keep them coming!!

Would you try another book from Sierra Simone and/or Guy Locke and Stephanie Rose ?

Sierra Simone, absolutely! She's becoming one of my favorite authors! Stephanie Rose, definitely! She narrated all of Book 1 flawlessly and I loved it. Guy Locke needs to be replaced ASAP.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Guy Locke and Stephanie Rose ?

Zachary Webber, Jacob Morgan, Sebastian York, or Joe Arden but I would honestly take almost anyone over this guy.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yep!

I hope the audiobook production gods hear me before Book 3 is recorded so that the narration can be fixed - otherwise, I'm sadly out on this series :(

An LB favorite!

Would you listen to The Hot One again? Why?

Absolutely! Such a sweet , unconventional love story with fierce, loveable characters. Not to mention, I LOVED Zachary Webber's narration and he might be my new favorite male narrator. Andi Arndt was fantastic as always.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's a tie between both lead characters - Delaney and Tyler. Tyler because he's such a crazy person and will do anything for Delaney! Delaney because she's a strong, smart woman who unapologetically does what is right for herself.

Which scene was your favorite?

Obviously, when Tyler goes to Nirvana ;)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!

A Fun, Short Romantic Mystery

What a fun, short mystery ride! The story begins with an accident that brings Denise and Gabe together as necessary partners in a dangerous and exciting escapade.

Denise is a refreshingly self-confident female lead. (Nothing pains me more than a heroine who constantly demeans herself because she isn't perfect.) Gabe, her billionaire boss, seems like a typical, haughty jerk at the beginning of the book but as he grows on you ;)

Narration: Leigh Kelly's voice is sultry, feminine and pleasantly British - it was music to my unrefined American ears ;)

Heat level: 3/5

Terrible Narration...

I don't feel like I can fairly review the story because the listening experience was so distracting, hence the 3 stars. The characters are college-aged so I would describe the story as young adult contemporary romance.

I hate to leave such negative feedback but the poor quality of the audio and lack of editing in combination with the lackluster narration ruined the experience of listening for me. The quality of the audio starts out well enough but then declines during later chapters of the book (beginning during Chapter 9) as if the narrator is in a tunnel.

Lynnae Stanwick's narration lacked inflection and depth. Her attempts at injecting emotion into the story were seriously limited - mostly she spoke more loudly or softly where emotion belonged.

Is it hot in here??

I'm a huge fan of Sawyer Bennett and the Wicked Horse series so I was thrilled when Book 4 was released and it did not disappoint! No spoilers, just review:

Wicked Ride is the story of Logan, a side character from the previous three books in the series and "fantasy-maker" at the Silo, a Wyoming members-only sex club. At the beginning of the book, all we know about Aurelie is that she is a virgin who has been brought to the club by a man named Magnus to be sold to the highest bidder.

If you have read other books in the series, you know that what goes on at the Silo ranges from BDSM to orgies (to anything one could sexually dream up) but the story between Logan and Aurelie is a little more vanilla than the previous three books. There is some peripheral... ahem... advanced sexual play going on throughout the story (come on, it's a sex club) but nothing that I would classify as hardcore. Don't get me wrong, it is still scorching hot, but it is different than the first three.

This story was full of surprises and "I-didn't-see-that-coming!" moments so I won't get into details but I will say that it is dark, troubled, complicated, and satisfying.

Think you can't love a gangster?

You might be wrong! I wasn't sure how on earth I was going to root for the hero of this story, an Irish mobster in Boston, but I took a chance based on the reviews and I'm so glad I did!

I fell in love easily with Mack, a fierce, determined fighter and orphan from the streets of Southie, who at the beginning of the story is searching for her missing best friend. She plans to infiltrate the MacKenna Syndicate, the Irish Boston mob in order to find out what might have happened to her friend but she meets Lachlan and her well-laid plans become more and more complicated.

Lachlan was raised in Ireland and migrates to Boston at a young age after his mother dies. As the grandson of Carrick Crow, the MacKenna Syndicate's underboss, he is third in line to the "throne" of the Syndicate. He meets Mack after watching her take down one of his best fighters (Go Mack!!) and doesn't know what to make of her but it quickly becomes clear that she is in danger.

The story was gripping as it wove through the complexities of the Boston underworld and the compelling and raw love story at the center. Was it violent? Yes! Sexual? Definitely... But the author finds a way to make you fall in love with Lachlan despite his misdeeds and... alternative lifestyle ;) You may even end up fantasizing about a sexy gangster of your own...

I have to give major props to Tracy Marks, the incredibly talented narrator who MADE this story for me. She managed Lachlan's Irish brogue and Mack's South Boston accent to perfection. Lachlan's sexiness was seriously heightened by the narration and I will definitely listen to Tracy Marks again.

I purchased the book and audiobook on sale through Amazon Whispersync but It is definitely worth a credit at full price!

Don't miss this story!!

I'm a Lisa Kleypas fan and have probably read over ten of her novels including the Hathaways, Capitol Theater, and Wallflower series. This book, while not part of a series, is now one of my favorites! I only wish I had found it sooner!

I hesitate to say much about the plot at the risk of spoiling the experience of reading it so I will simply say that I highly recommend that you shouldn't hesitate to buy it if you are a lover of historical romance.
