Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

The right balance - loved
Revisado: 07-15-23
My friend recommended I read this after I’d had a challenging time. It was perfect, putting things in perspective. I already knew and loved Trevor Noah. This book has a perfect balance of personal history, the history of where he grew up, South Africa, the family context, and how humor and heart made its way to the wonderful person he is today. 10/10 recommend.

This is an honest, upfront, relatable account of one suburban housewife's journey from miserable wine-soaked boozer to self-respecting sober lady. This audiobook is an inspirational tale of self-transformation, addiction, and domesticity.

Loved it- philosophical questions put into fiction
Revisado: 12-22-22
This is a challenging and provocative read. I enjoyed it, and it felt like the universe (or the algorithm) did me a favor introducing me to this author as I’m working on a philosophy degree. This book complements Nietzsche quite well. I recommend it- but it is not a cozy mystery or a beach read.

Historia
On the grubby outskirts of Paris, Grace restores bric-a-brac, mends teapots, re-sets gems. She calls herself Julie, says she's from California, and slips back to a rented room at night. Regularly, furtively, she checks the hometown paper on the Internet. Home is Garland, Tennessee, and there, two young men have just been paroled. One, she married; the other, she's in love with. Both were jailed for a crime that Grace herself planned in exacting detail.

Hated the ending (no spoilers)
Revisado: 07-31-15
Slow-moving, and as an audiobook I would sometimes rewind, thinking I must have missed something, but I hadn't. Just fluffy dialogue or never-ending inner dialogues from an unreliable narrator. The suspense was good at points, but then we don't ever see the other side of the coin, or see her fully unravel the way the plot seems to lead us. I have an art history degree and work in the arts, and that sensibility was enjoyable, especially the main character's wanting her boyfriend's realist paintings to be more conceptual. It felt that the plot missed something. The second romance wasn't convincing.

A downer, but what an intriguing downer
Revisado: 06-07-15
I couldn't put it down; I had to know what happened next. I like how the unreliable narrator was alternately sympathetic, pathetic, and a twit, and how for most of the novel I deliciously felt convinced that she'd done it. The ending felt like a workshopped or crowd-sourced effort, too tepid and pat to feel satisfying after I'd been listening a bit obsessively. However, I ran on the same trail today is the last time I listen to the book and having that same scenery made me nostalgic for the strong performances, the setting in the suburbs of London, and the nicely drawn, more complex than you at first assume relationship between the main character and her roommate.

I am a fan of jennifer wiener, and always feel addicted to whatever novel of hers I'm reading. I like how the lives of the characters gradually intertwined over the course of the story. However, there were some pretty big leaps toward the end.

despite tiresome narrator, a solid read
Revisado: 08-06-12
This story is like 'A Little Princess' or even 'Orphan Annie' for adult women. An innocent, good-hearted young woman is 'discovered' by a sophisticated man with unlimited means. The only catch is...he has intimacy issues, and she'll have to learn how to get close to him on his terms.
I enjoyed fantasizing what it would be like to have such a wealthy boyfriend who could buy me a new wardrobe, but the protagonist is annoyingly similar to Bella of the Twilight books with her 'oh, I don't WANT new clothes, I don't event care about clothes.' Her reactions to the plot twists are alternately understandable/realistic and then infuriating/not believable.
It was a very fun summer 'escape' read with imaginative, lively sex scenes. My husband encouraged me to read the rest of the series, if you know what I mean.
The one thing that keeps me from rushing to read the next one is the narrator, and the decision to fully read every entire email, from time, to subject line, to signature 'Christian Grey, CEO, Grey Holdings...blah blah blah.' Their email banter WAS NOT CUTE when read in this way. I can see it being fine to skim on the printed page, but the narrator read every word of the email framework as though it was essential to the plot line, and it made me want to tear out my earbuds in frustration.
