Disappointing
Revisado: 07-31-23
I wanted to like it, but I found Berg's main character to be annoyingly naive and indecisive. Some of the things she does just feel implausible. Also, I got really annoyed at Berg's penchant for long lists as description. Does she always do this? It's as if "if 3 is good, 9 is better."

In November 1944, 18-year-old June Walker boards an unmarked bus, destined for a city that doesn't officially exist. There, June joins hundreds of other young girls operating massive machines whose purpose is never explained. They know they are helping to win the war, but must ask no questions and reveal nothing to outsiders.

I struggled to finish this. Tangled story lines that never seemed to really come together. Plot just plods along, like an old mule. Strange time changes. And overall, it was hard to care about any of the characters.

Interesting story, Suspenseful
Revisado: 03-26-23
There were plenty of twists and turns here, and the characters were well drawn. Warning: references to sexual violence are disturbing, but I found the story interesting.

Historia
Brilliantly executed and compulsively listenable, Unsheltered is the story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum, as they navigate the challenges of surviving a world in the throes of major cultural shifts. In this mesmerizing story told in alternating chapters, Willa and Thatcher come to realize that though the future is uncertain, even unnerving, shelter can be found in the bonds of kindred - whether family or friends - and in the strength of the human spirit.

Skip it
Revisado: 03-05-23
I can't believe I'm saying this of a Kingsolver book, but I recommend skipping it. I made it more than 3 hours in, and I just can't take it anymore. The characters feel hollow and like mere excuses for Kingsolver to lecture on a variety of topics: economy, biology, labor history, etc. In theory, I liked the idea of shelter as a metaphorical concept, but, honestly, I feel like a college freshman moving from lecture class to lecture class. I wish I still had a return allowance.

I rarely think this: it was too long
Revisado: 01-24-23
As with most of the intertwined novels where one story is weaker than the rest, I found the Adrienne chapters almost unbearable. She was so damn cloying and saintly. I do wish that the book focused on Beatrice and/or Marta, both of whom were much more interested because of their flaws as human beings. They still could have been carrying out the spirit of the Lafayettes in their works, which I think would have worked better as an historical awareness of Adrienne and the Marquis rather than using them as characters. Even though I'm complaining that it was too long, the last few chapters about Marta and Beatrice seemed rushed and under-developed--lacking as a satisfying conclusion. It felt like Dray suddenly thought, "better wrap this up before it gets too long."

Makes me so happy...
Revisado: 10-29-22
...to once again be in the company of this intrepid foursome and friends. The new narrator stepped in seamlessly. I'm not much of a mystery reader. I read these for the wonderful characters. But the mystery here was, I thought, the best of the three Ossman books. Favorite scenes (no spoilers): Stephen calmly looking around the library while chaos surrounds him and "best sex I ever had" vs "I think I slept with him... I must have." So many laughs!

Frustrating for most if it
Revisado: 08-15-22
If you're looking for a WWII story, this isn't it. Aside from a few moments, the war is almost incidental. As others have said, it could use an editor--I rarely complain about a long audio book, but this one dragged at times and some scenes really weren't key to the book (the leering cop on the beach, for instance). The last portion of the book was better as questions began to be resolved, and I was genuinely moved by the ending. But without saying much about the plot in last quarter of the book, I do wish that Morton had come at this story from another direction, that she had flipped the premise around and focused on other characters from the beginning.

Historia
In 1850s South Carolina, an enslaved woman named Rose faced a crisis: the imminent sale of her daughter Ashley. Thinking quickly, she packed a cotton bag for her with a few items, and, soon after, the nine-year-old girl was separated from her mother and sold. Decades later, Ashley’s granddaughter Ruth embroidered this family history on the sack in spare, haunting language. Historian Tiya Miles carefully traces these women’s faint presence in archival records, and, where archives fall short, she turns to objects, art, and the environment to write a singular history of slavery.

Just the kind of social history I love. Terrific mix of slave history, women's history, and material culture analysis. Miles is at her best when she's closely examining what each element of the artifact means. Very moving.

Apprenticed to Ezra at 13, Emma watched with shame and anger as her kind mentor was forced to wear the six-pointed yellow star on his clothing. She was likewise powerless to help when they pulled Ezra from his shop at gunpoint, the first of many villagers stolen away and never seen again. In the years that her sleepy coastal village has suffered under the enemy, Emma has silently, stealthily fought back.

Wonderful, quirky characters and such elegant prose--moments of poetry. Emma was so clever, a pessimist who nevertheless helps other people hope.

Sad to see them all go...
Revisado: 06-14-22
The series has been lots of fun to listen to. I've loved these characters with all their quirks and grit, and feel like Peggy is just a postcard away. The end was a satisfying "all's well" conclusion.
I know some other reviewer wrote that the audio book stopped before Jim came home, but this Audible book version was complete.
