Historia
When peddler John Durbeyfield learns that he may be a descendant of a noble family, he sends his oldest child, Tess, to “claim kin.” Blindly ushered into harm’s way, the strong-willed yet untinctured peasant girl is not prepared for the blighted course her life will take. Nor for those whose destructive desires will determine her fate, and force Tess to make only the most desperate of choices. From her tragic loss of innocence through betrayal and revenge, Tess’s struggle for survival challenged the era’s mores and the cruel indifference shown women in Victorian society.

Fantastic narration, compassion inducing tale
Revisado: 09-27-20
The language is gorgeous, the narrator makes it even more so, and the story is moving to say the least, grabbing my insides and twisting them all around. I had no idea what would happen next and moved up and down each day with the vicissitudes of Tess' life. Tess is so kind, caring, innocent, and vulnerable we can't help but develop compassion for her and hope for the best and she bravely makes her way through life.

Very moving story but TERRIBLE narrators
Revisado: 07-30-20
I first read this book on my Kindle and loved it. The sort of book that stays with you, so much so that a year later I decided to listen to it. If I hadn't known how good it was I would have quit. The narrators ruined the story, most especially the woman doing Rebecca who was so devoid of emotion and paused so long after every sentence that I think a computer voice would have done a better job. The man narrating Henrik was not much better, especially as a younger boy: he was always angry, petulant, and annoying.. The narrator doing Greta was decent but since she was the last and the shortest it was not enough to redeem the other two. I don't understand how these narrators even were hired-were they bargain basement hires? Did they think they weren't being paid enough so they decided to do an awful job? What a shame to ruin such a good book.

Historia
Professor Betsey Dexter Dyer examines the wide ranging field of genetics, which is the study of the hereditary information of organisms, how it is used, and how it is transferred through generations. These fascinating lectures also address DNA sequences and how they apply to "genetic engineering," viruses, and genetic diseases such as cancers and birth defects.

Fascinating
Revisado: 11-13-17
This is one of my top favorite books, maybe even my top. Betsey Dexter Dyer has a remarkable way of taking complicated information and painting a word picture such that I can see it all happening and understand it. Usually with a subject like this diagrams, pictures or charts would be helpful, but I never felt the need for any of that.
I do not have much of a science background: I took the minimum in school. But this course was so fascinating that I made my husband listen to it when I finished and I listened again, right along with him. You can hear the passion in Betsey's voice for the subject matter.
Her other course on bacteria is also superb. I wish she would make more. Until then I will listen again to the two she has made.

Oh, the angst of it!
Revisado: 09-06-16
I am in physical turmoil: I feel as if I am there and want to shout "No, no, you can't do this!"
I have read this book before and seen the movie countless times, but listening is a whole new experience. I am living the book, the characters even populating my dreams at night.
The narrator is fantastic, making the many humorous scenes laugh-out-loud good and the pathos gripping. At this moment I can only feel sorry for those who have somehow lived like I had, never having listened to this book!

Historia
History for busy people. The Cold War: History in an Hour gives a brilliant overview of the unusual and non-violent war between East and West that lasted nearly fifty years. From the end of World War Two to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 the world lived within the shadow of the Cold War. Russia and America eyed each other with suspicion and hostility.

Pulls the war into a cohesive whole
Revisado: 01-06-13
Having lived through this war as a child and young adult, this was a good read to draw everything together into a cohesive whole. I can now look back and see the connection between different events during this time period. Because this war was never declared as a "real" war, it is difficult to give a connected play by play interpretation of events, but the author does a good job of giving an understandable overview.
The narrator does an excellent job-he is British and with his dry sense of humor actually had me laugh aloud once or twice over his droll interpretation.
This book would be helpful to anyone wanting some background info before reading a book taking place during this time period or a book going into more detail on any aspect of this war.
