Doesn’t work as an audio
Revisado: 02-07-24
The text doesn’t work as well when produced as an audio version. The story is fine, the performance is fine, but having this particular text read aloud doesn’t work. If you want to read this one, then do it in hard copy

A zero
Revisado: 07-13-23
At first I thought the narrator was a lousy fit for the book but then I realized I couldn’t care less about any of the characters in the story. I had no interest in anyone or in the outcome. The entire book was a waste of my time.

Historia
In the wake of her parents’ death, Aretha, a habitually single Black lawyer, has had only one obsession in life—success—until she falls for Aaron, a coffee entrepreneur. Moving into his Brooklyn brownstone to live along with his Hurricane Sandy-traumatized, illegal-gun-stockpiling, optimized-soy-protein-eating, bunker-building roommates, Aretha finds that her dreams of making partner are slipping away, replaced by an underground world, one of selling guns and training for a doomsday that’s maybe just around the corner.

I kept waiting for the story to go somewhere. I loved the narration, but the story seemed to be missing either more action or a bigger “lesson”

Historia
Sixteen year-old Katya Spivak is out for a walk on the gracious streets of Bayhead Harbor with her two summer babysitting charges when she's approached by silver-haired, elegant Marcus Kidder. At first, his interest in her seems harmless, even pleasant, like his name - a sort of gentle joke. His beautiful home, the children's books that he's written, his classical music, the marvelous art in his study, his lavish presents to her. But by degrees, almost imperceptibly, something changes.

Zero drama

Absolutely nothing to compel the listener to care about the characters or their development.
On a minor point the narrator voices a 28yr old from LA like a 40yr old divorcee from Staten Island.

Historia
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Weak entry into the genre
Revisado: 12-29-20
A country house mystery - even the closed circle itself - on the heels of The Hunting Party, is weak. Foley is no master of the genre Christie created which makes listening to yet another group of people traipsing around some tricky landscape in unsuitable footwear too predictable

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 01-13-16
I was surprised at how utterly boring this was. No action. The entire thing felt like it should be 1/5th the length and still be more than adequate to set up a history for an actual story. This was fairly terrible
