Love and Sicily
Revisado: 08-29-19
A very enjoyable visit to Sicily filled with love in many forms. I could taste the food, feel the cultural energy and cry a mournful loss as well. The characters were well drawn and the story was engaging.

Historia
Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes - meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven. But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.

A darkly entertaining read
Revisado: 07-12-19
I don't usually root for murder, but the character development in this story had me doing just that, with greater and greater fervor. Without spoiling the experience for the reader, I will just comment that the surprise ending was just as well executed and the reader will be satisfied.

Sakina's Restaurant breathes new life into an age old story: the emotive tale of an immigrant coming to New York in pursuit of the American dream. Actor, comedian, and writer Aasif Mandvi originally performed his Obie Award-winning solo show off-Broadway 20 years ago. This past October, the iconic play was reimagined and produced by Audible for a limited run at Minetta Lane Theatre in the West Village of Manhattan. Recorded for an Audible-exclusive audience, listeners can forgo the price of admission and embark on the cross-cultural journey with Mandvi.

Culturally sensitive
Revisado: 04-12-19
As an American woman, I found this very offensive, for personal reasons.. However the story was culturally accurate and the performance was excellent.

Good content. Narration made me very anxious
Revisado: 04-09-19
This was a great book, addressing common issues most women have faced. I had to give it 4 stars instead of 5 because the narration was so poor. If you are narrating a medical book, I would expect one to check on the pronunciations. As a medical professional, this book was filled with so many mispronunciations that I often had to turn it off and take a break. There was even an inconsistency between the pronunciation of the same words from one section of the book to the next. The narration was also very mechanical, which is not appealing, but not as annoying as the mispronounced words. Nevertheless, the book is good, I recommend it.

But when the lovers find themselves on opposing sides of the religious divide sweeping across the country, Ned goes to work for Princess Elizabeth. When she becomes queen, all Europe turns against England.

Big dissapointment
Revisado: 11-19-18
Much as I have loved Ken Follett's prior novels, this one left me itching for it to be over. I am not fond of violence, war or religious themes and that was all this had to offer. In addition the French accent throughout the book was very annoying. This one was a miss. A little more human interest plot would have been welcomed.

Historia
A wildly successful first novel made Grady Tripp a young star, and seven years later he still hasn't grown up. He's now a writing professor in Pittsburgh, plummeting through middle age, stuck with an unfinishable manuscript, an estranged wife, a pregnant girlfriend, and a talented but deeply disturbed student named James Leer.

The Worst Audiobook I've ever listened to
Revisado: 07-27-17
Would you try another book from Michael Chabon and/or David Colacci?
No
What could Michael Chabon have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Made the characters more likable, less sardonic and created a plot.
How could the performance have been better?
The performer has a droning, depressed tone, very unpleasant
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Wonder Boys?
Too many to record.
Any additional comments?
I would not recommend this book at all. It was a waste of my money. Depressing and it didn't really go anywhere.

Important subject, but terrible narration.
Revisado: 01-15-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, I think it is very important to learn some of the important Alzheimer's issues, and what it is like to live with this devastating condition. Anything that might encourage support of Alzheimer's research is something that I would encourage.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
To be sure he is a terrible speaker. He sounds like he has a mouthful of marbles and I often found it difficult to actually understand him.
Do you think Before I Forget needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, I think they said what needs to be said. A follow up book would only be worthwhile if there was a significant, dramatic change in their lives or in the treatment of Alzheimer's that affects Ms B.
Any additional comments?
This book was important to educate the public, however it became more about Dan Gasby and not enough about Ms B's experience. He has a bit of an ego and it became irritating. Combine that with his poor speaking ability, and it was difficult to wade through it. However, if you don't know anything about Alzheimer's, it is a good primer and we certainly need to be informed so we can support funding and research as well as compassionate care of Alzheimer's sufferers.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Thank God that's over!
Revisado: 03-13-16
What would have made All the Light We Cannot See better?
A story that had more threads than cobwebs, It was dreary and boring and the connections between the stories were so weak as to be almost invisible.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Probably something lighter, with a promising plot. Maybe an Irish Classic.
What does Zach Appelman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A French accent, though not authentic.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment and restlessness. I stuck it out to the end, as is my wont, but it was not worth it.
Any additional comments?
Don't waste your credits. I was encouraged by two others to listen to this and I just don't get it. If you like WW II stories and you enjoy being depressed, go for it. Not my cup of tea.

Secret Keeper
Revisado: 05-08-15
Would you try another book from Kate Morton and/or Caroline Lee?
Probably not. Caroline Lee was fine.
What could Kate Morton have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The pattern of descriptive text with no actual plot activity droned on an on in this book. It could have been condensed down to the essential story and I would have liked it quite a bit better.
Which scene was your favorite?
The scene in which the bomb changed the whole story, that was brilliant.
Was The Secret Keeper worth the listening time?
It was hard to stick with it because so many parts were boring. I would probably have to say no, as it wasted so much of my precious listening time.
Any additional comments?
This may be my personal bias, but I really resent authors who fill their stories with so much descriptive verbage as to elongate the length of the book.

Rambling without any purpose
Revisado: 03-27-15
What disappointed you about The Patron Saint of Ugly?
The story had no real plot, it just kept rambling from place to place and often just didn't make sense.
Has The Patron Saint of Ugly turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
Which scene was your favorite?
I appreciated the tasteful treatment of what happened to her brother, though not really my favorite part just my favorite quality of storytelling by the author,
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Patron Saint of Ugly?
Long , long stretches of pointless narration and description, boring dialogue that went nowhere.
Any additional comments?
I wanted to like this, but it was just untenable, to me.
