Historia
Everything he learned to protect the president, he must use to take out theirs. With an American president distracted by growing tensions in North Korea and Iran, an ominous new threat is emerging in Moscow. A czar is rising in the Kremlin, a Russian president feverishly consolidating power, silencing his opposition, and plotting a brazen and lightning-fast military strike that could rupture the NATO alliance and bring Washington and Moscow to the brink of nuclear war. But in his blind spot is the former U.S. Secret Service agent, Marcus Ryker.

Not my cup of tea
Revisado: 12-02-24
The writing was good and the reader was excellent. But the long long lead up to the actual events just got a little old. It was so clear that the writer had to engage us with his people so we got lots and lots of details but it was almost to the end of the book before the real story started. I think that books about military maneuvers are just not my thing.

Historia
Two thousand years after his birth and death, Jesus of Nazareth continues to be of vital interest. Yet much of the scholarship around Jesus focuses on his religious significance. Jesus for Everyone examines his most famous teachings from a fresh perspective, exploring how they have continued to shape ethics and civilization in the West for two millennia. Even for those who reject faith, Jesus’s life and his philosophy are important to study, writes renowned biblical scholar and author Amy-Jill Levine, because of the insights they hold for us today.

I love hearing new but loving and careful perspectives. AJ Levine always brings brilliance. And she’s always respectful of differing points of view.

What a miserable book. It’s like one of those click-bait stories that says, “You’ll never believe who it turns out to be,” and then 50 pages or clicks later, it still hasn’t told you. I keep trying to force myself through another 15 minutes only to discover that nothing has happened. I am also NOT appreciative of horror or demon stories. So be aware.

Historia
In 2011, three successful and highly educated women fell head over heels for the brilliant and charming Ethan Schuman. Unbeknownst to the others, each exchanged countless messages with Ethan, staying up late into the evenings to deepen their connections with this fascinating man. His detailed excuses about broken webcams and complicated international calling plans seemed believable, as did last minute trip cancellations. After all, why would he lie? Ethan wasn't after money—he never convinced his marks to shell out thousands of dollars for some imagined crisis.

Great writing, fascinating documentary
Revisado: 06-26-24
Documentaries can sometimes get dry and the writing can get over technical. This kept things moving along, so it was hard to put down and her descriptors were interesting and accurate. Also frightening. If you’re thinking of online dating OR of seeing an ob/gyn in New Jersey, read this first!!

Hallmark-ish
Revisado: 03-27-24
I like Blackstock’s books in general. You don’t have to run afowl of kids or grandkids popping to hear horrible language or bloody descriptions. This reader interprets a lot of dialog as whiny which I find irritating but I think is supposed to evoke pity and sympathy. It makes me fast forward. I feel like the books have become more flat - everyone has a heterosexual partner with whom they’re engaged or married by the end of the book. Everyone has been told that God loves them. But a few of the good Christians have delighted that the bad guys were killed and they were happy the bad guys would “burn in hell.” This will probably be my last Blackstock book.

Historia
In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Fascinating for all the moderates
Revisado: 02-27-24
I’m always so surprised when people are “all Republican” or “all Democrat”. I feel like I see value on both sides. So it was nice to hear someone who’s conservative, but balanced, listening to other people, but able to express herself, firmly entrenched in American politics, but not jaded. Really insightful book.

Historia
Kate has always been a wanderer. A well-published author, married many times, she has lived a life rich with explorations of the natural world and the human soul. Now, at fifty-seven, she leaves her lover, Yolo, to embark on a new excursion, one that begins on the Colorado River, proceeds through the past, and flows, inexorably, into the future. As Yolo begins his own parallel voyage, Kate encounters celibates and lovers, shamans and snakes, memories of family disaster and marital discord, and emerges at a place where nothing remains but love.

Sorry. Tedious.
Revisado: 02-06-24
As much as I love, Alice Walker, this was a total miss for me, really tedious and boring and disconnected. I have no idea even what the story was supposed to teach me. Of course, Woodard is a wonderful reader, that didn’t improve the story for me at all.

Historia
Written with bracing wit and intelligence, Rachel Maddow's Drift argues that we've drifted away from America's original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war, with all the financial and human costs that entails. To understand how we've arrived at such a dangerous place, Maddow takes us from the Vietnam War to today's war in Afghanistan.

Tired of this kind of female character
Revisado: 10-21-23
I made it through the whole book, but the main character is so weak and scared and just unable to resist the big strong man who lies to her and about her, but ONLY to keep the poor little woman safe. She’s just so overwrought that she just can’t help leaning her little head against his big chest so he can protect her. Ugh.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Thank you so much for no whiny women
Revisado: 08-31-23
Having female characters that do not whine but do other annoying things like turn on one another, is really refreshing in today’s market. This book has people who are just like the ones I know in real life. Complicated, malleable, stubborn. Really a refreshing read.
