Historia
Danyal Jilani doesn't lack confidence. He may not be the smartest guy in the room, but he's funny, gorgeous, and going to make a great chef one day. His father doesn't approve of his career choice, but that hardly matters. What does matter is the opinion of Danyal's longtime crush, the perfect-in-all-ways Kaval, and her family, who consider him a less than ideal arranged marriage prospect.

Deep issues covered in a light hearted way.
Revisado: 11-08-21
Despite the laugh out loud moments in the book, Masood manages to cover issues that are deep. This is a great read for both adults and the YA audience

Historia
It is 1995, and Anvar Faris is a restless, rebellious, and sharp-tongued boy doing his best to grow up in Karachi, Pakistan. As fundamentalism takes root within the social order and the zealots next door attempt to make Islam great again, his family decides, not quite unanimously, to start life over in California. Ironically, Anvar's deeply devout mother and his model-Muslim brother adjust easily to life in America, while his fun-loving father can't find anyone he relates to. For his part, Anvar fully commits to being a bad Muslim.

Nearly Perfect
Revisado: 08-06-21
Masood writes a nearly perfect novel that presents both a poignant and comical depiction of Muslim immigrants that end up in San Francisco by two very separate means. While the novel deals with contempary issues, the core of the novel is about love, bravery, and often volatile nature of familial relationships. The dominant theme of knowing and listening to one's story is probably the "deepest part" of the book, despite this really being a love story.
The "back and forth" narrators of Anvar and Zahra works seemlessly as the story tracks their lives until they intersect in San Francisco. Often the story is intense, but Anvar's sense of humor levels out the intensity of the novel, making it more of a comedy-drama than a drama-comedy.
Lastly, the performance is absolutely amazing. It was one of the most enjoyable books that I have listened to; however, there were so many places that I wished that I could have highlighted and took notes that I will probably have to buy the paperback copy and annotate it

Historia
It may be a wonderful world, but as Dan Riskin explains, it's also a dangerous, disturbing, and disgusting one. At every turn, it seems, living things are trying to eat us, poison us, use our bodies as their homes, or have us spread their eggs. In Mother Nature Is Trying to Kill You, Riskin is our guide through the natural world at its most gloriously ruthless. Using the seven deadly sins as a road map, Riskin offers dozens of jaw-dropping examples that illuminate how brutal nature can truly be.

Perfection
Revisado: 09-07-20
Riskin does a fantastic job at detailing the horrible "natural world" and all of its fantastic imagery. Additionally, he communicates science in a way that reaches the common man while exploring his love for his son and wife. Humorous, adventurous, philosophical, Riskin's musings successfully explores his thesis while exploring secondary claims of the "morality" of nature and the seven deadly sins. This book does for Science what Rachel Carson did with her writing. an amazing work of research and art.
