Pam, thanks again.

I needed a book to pry me out of a series I've been re-re-reading and know that you've done it before with your down to earth characters and their stories. The Social Climber of Davenport Heights did the job: I laughed, I cried, I swore at the characters a time or two, but generally wanted to be there. You definitely did it again. Historia
When she fell asleep, the world was doomed. When she awoke, it was dead. In the wake of a fever that decimated the earth's population - killing women and children and making childbirth deadly for the mother and infant - the midwife must pick her way through the bones of the world she once knew to find her place in this dangerous new one. Gone are the pillars of civilization. All that remains is power - and the strong who possess it.

If you like end time stories, this is for you.

WOW! Unnamed Midwife is actually many-named as she takes you through the world before/after a plague, killing many, but mostly Women & children. Elison draws you in with well drawn characters and plot of this end-of-the-world saga.

Historia
London, 1759. After a high-society electric-eel party leads to a duel that ends badly, Lord John Grey feels the need to lie low for a while. Conveniently, before starting his new commission in His Majesty’s army, Lord John receives an urgent summons. An old friend from the military, Charlie Carruthers, is facing court-martial in Canada, and has called upon Lord John to serve as his character witness.
Grey voyages to the New World,a land rife with savages (many of them on his own side) and cleft by war.

Fills in holes in the Outlander Universe
Revisado: 04-27-17
I love that Diana Gabaldon writes these Outlander universe novellas. Lord John is a fascinating and fun character himself, but there's always a chance you'll see someone else from her other books, too. Diana writes so well I feel like I'm in the circle when she describes the electric eel party, waiting for the shock.
These novellas are wonderful, complete stories which only take two or three hours of listening time, so they are perfect for me when I'm just running around town doing errands in the car. I can finish the novellas in less than a week while the long novels take most of a long trip or almost a month of in-town errands to finish.
The narrator, Jeff Woodman, does a very good job of personalizing the characters so you can tell who is talking and "acts" the story well. I would happily purchase a book he had narrated.
