Confusing at times but all the strings come together in a nice knot.

Starting this was difficult because it was hard to track the individual storylines and the shifts in perspective but by the end all of them coalesced into a wonderfully beautiful and interesting whole.

I'm kind of a Marko Kloos fanboy at this point so everything I say is biased.

The excellent story by Marko Kloos and the excellent narration by Luke Daniels again dive into humanity's struggle against the big bad aliens filled with action, suspense, and relatable characters. I enjoyed this work thoroughly.

My only complaint is that the story is a little shorter than I would have preferred and felt slightly rushed as a result.

Can't wait for the next installment

Overacting

This book came out a rather juvenile and out of character for most of the characters in the book. Other than perhaps Rei and to a smaller degree Kylo Ren, every character was so linear it hurts.

Essentially both the book and the move are a teaser-trailer for future releases which is great, but their own substance is rather lackluster.

I'm sad to say Marc Thompson, in his enthusiasm, overacted a little bit way too much by over exaggerating every intonation almost anywhere where emotion was at all relevant. Usually I'm not bother by such things but he pushed it way too far to the point that it breaks immersion in the story.

There were good things too and I especially loved the irony in and the contrast between Kylo Ren's and Rei's attitudes toward the force. Fans who who follow such things would definitely appreciate the subtleties. I just wish there were more.

Oh yeah, and someone dies, and that's one of the strongest aspects of the story in my opinion.

I was blown away - it was the best sci-fi drama I've read in years

This book, like the series, has been entirely gripping, fascinating, and suspenseful at every turn. All the puzzles, motivations, and events fit together in a masterpiece tapestry of a story that was one of the most interesting, suspenseful, and unpredictable stories I've read in years.

While some of the specifics aren't realistic beyond the 4th wall, the story arc is meticulously faithful to its own material. It's no hard sifi but that doesn't even matter.

This was a review of both the book and the overall trilogy.

Furthermore, Greg Tremblay did a fantastic job at narrating this story.

Plot Convenience > Plausibility

I felt the overall story was quite engaging, if not confusing at times. The structure seemed a bit odd where the fist half of the book the Alliance dominated the Jung and the second half of the book tried to make up for that imbalance. Some spaceship chase sequences were particularly implausible where two experienced pilots get put to shame by a newbie soldier recruit.

Jessica is still being possessed by some sort of madness. The only plausible way the to explain her continued uncharacteristic behavior is perhaps to come up with a rationalization that she might be an abuser of stims or some other performance enhancing drugs which could explain why she's acting so strangely the last couple of books.

Personally I was looking toward a cathartic ending but there's a cliffhanger instead.

Overall however, I felt too many story arks were in this book were filler and that detracted from the overall scheme of things.

What's with Max

I liked the story well enough, and I'm really hoping for more books in the series as I not a fan of cliffhanger endings.

That said, some things have changed and the first book is still my favorite. Max for example isn't the same Max we all know and love by the end of the story and he suddenly becomes a fan of fairly linear tactics because deus ex machinima.

(An example: he gets a jolly bag of treats in the form of various munitions that cause Max to salivate with celerity about all the outstanding tactical mischief he can cause with them... and then just uses 2 missiles from the new arsenal in the most bland fashion.)

Dr. Sahim also continues to to lose character as well. It's as if all of his intelligence and identity was sacrificed for comic relief. In the beginning of the series, his character had depth, motivations, experiences, and purpose. Now his character is limited to petting cats, humoring the CIC, and questioning Max's about his past.

On the bright side, we get to see more into Max's past, a brief look into Krag psychology, more sci-fi technical stuff, and exposition of the Union Navy's customs thereby expanding and ameliorating the overall universe.

Overall, it's still a pretty good book, just noticeably less satisfying than the previous entries.

I really couldn't imagine the author finishing the trilogy with this book until the last couple of chapters - the universe was expanding revelation after revaluation and yet the ending ties all the knots together nicely. I just wish there would be more sequels or at least further development of the Atlantis universe.
