Not my favorite
Revisado: 03-13-23
I like Dugoni as a writer, but not so much this series. This was my least favorite of the 4 I’ve listened to. I don’t relate well to the characters, but for me the narration is distracting. While the narrator has perfect diction, I don’t respond well to her style. I’ll be giving up on the series and looking for other Dugoni books (with other narrators)

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Great road trip companion!
Revisado: 03-16-22
This was my first Nora Roberts….I know, I know! No idea why, but there you go. I listened on a long road trip and lived the journey! It was so compelling that I did yet another first: I continued to listen with earbuds in my hotel room!
The beginning stretched believability just a bit, but still sucked me into the story. By the time the real action started, I was fully into the story and the characters. It made 12 hours of driving feel like nothing, so kudos to the performance! This is not my normal genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Decent story
Revisado: 04-03-21
Though it was mostly predictable, the story was still engaging. However, the narration was a bit distracting to me. A different narrator would have made quite a difference, just in my opinion. Still, not a bad story

The narration ruined it for me
Revisado: 03-21-21
This is my third Audible in this series, and Threadgill was a new author for me. I’ve been very impressed with his work, it I’ll have to read the books from now on. The narrator on the first two was difficult to get used to, but this one was a dealbreaker for me. His inappropriate pronunciation, stilted reading, emphasis on the wrong words so often, was totally distracting. The author’s fine work was trivialized by these things and sone character’s awful accents. Ug. I didn’t enjoy this one, but only because of the narration.

An unexpected disappointment
Revisado: 12-12-20
Wow, I so much wanted to love this one as much as Rutherford's "New York" and "London"; in both of those, I learned so much history while being intrigued by the storylines of families through time. I love a LONG Audible listen, and these certainly fit that requirement! So I was excited to start "Paris", only to be quickly disappointed. (I still made it to 6 hrs and 40 min left before I allowed myself to give up and listen to something entertaining).
From the beginning I could not relate to the narrator; while her diction was perfect and she did a decent job with most characters, I never related to her as the narrator and was distracted by that. I particularly winced everytime she spoke with an "American accent" (really?) Her voice was so flat, but I guess it's hard to speak in different dialects....this narrator just didn't do it for me, and I will watch for her.
The story was uber-confusing! I replayed sections over and over, trying to figure out where I lost the thread...jumping around in time was unclear much of the time (to me), and there were few characters I cared about, as I was always trying to remember who they were and what part of the story they were in.
I'm sorry to leave a negative review, but I just found very little entertainment value in this recording. It wa more like being in a dull history class and striving to hang in there! By the way, I noticed much of the "history or story" was told this time through someone literally teaching the history to a younger character, rather than being told through story and action.
I will definitely try another Rutherfurd, after reading plenty of reviews and listening to a sample of the audio....this one just wasn't for me.
