Historia
The desert planet Arrakis, called Dune, has been destroyed. Now, the Bene Gesserit, heirs to Dune's power, have colonized a green world—and are tuning it into a desert, mile by scorched mile. Chapterhouse Dune is the last book Frank Herbert wrote before his death: A stunning climax to the epic Dune legend that will live on forever.

Brilliant display of political theories

I really appreciate how the book traversed many different takes on governance and their pitfalls behind the main story.

For a thousand years, Doro has cultivated a small African village, carefully breeding its people in search of seemingly unattainable perfection. But when a gang of New World slavers destroys his village, ruining his grand experiment, Doro is forced to go west and begin anew. He meets Anyanwu, a centuries-old woman whose means of immortality are as kind as his are cruel. Now they begin a struggle that will last centuries.

Fantastic original fantasy with lineages I can trace!
Revisado: 03-23-24
I love the historical reimagining of the colonial past of the Unite States. I can clearly see where in Butler’s characters there are lineages of past science fiction influences. A complete masterpiece that could only be told properly through the lens of a Black Woman in America!
Understated and Impressionable!

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Excellent fairy tale written in a style of dark fantasy true to Stephen King.
Revisado: 03-02-24
I have been looking for reads that really dive deep into the realm of dark fantasy that, in my opinion, only a few writers can hit upon. King is one of those writers (others include Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, etc.) .
I like how he portrayed the Lovecraft influences of Cthulhu who sleeps in r’lyeh.

Storytelling that brings the work the life for a reader with a disability
Revisado: 01-10-24
This is yet another masterpiece written by Neil Gaiman. What I cannot underscore enough is how much I have been able to rediscover his work when he performs the storytellings himself. I am utterly and frankly grateful.
As a reader with a learning disability that affects my very ability to read, Neil Gaiman has helped me rediscover a love of reading that I once thought I would never be able to fully enjoy. When he uses voices to display how characters sound to him, and when he describes the landscapes as he has seen them, my mind feels liberated to see and touch lands, or interact with characters in a way that would be quite a bit of exercise for me reading in print by myself. Listening to Gaiman is like hearing a story from a traveling bard or treasured griot, and I thank him for that magic that he was reawaken for me :)

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Interesting plot, but a bit soiled by the anti-Asian racism and glorification of the Italian mafia
Revisado: 12-27-23
The plot was fantastic and i appreciated how there was a connection made between the classics of old and the modernist technocratic portrayal of VR.
What distracted me however was the distraction of gratuitous anti-Asian racism juxtaposed with the protagonist supposedly being of mixed-race Black/Japanese personage. As a reader who is also a person of color, the one-dimensional way certain characters were portrayed actually betrayed the fact that this story was written by a cis-gendered white male with no personal connection to any of the cultures he portrayed. What drove this point further home is how the Italian mafia was overly gloried throughout the novel. There is an apparent caste system here, and it’s clear where the author feels each ethnicity belongs in this futuristic tale.
Would recommend this read, but with a grain of salt.

The world of Dune has shaped an entire generation of science fiction. From the sand blasted world of Arrakis, to the splendor of the imperial homeworld of Kaitain, readers and listeners have lived in a universe of treachery and wonder. Now, these stories expand on the Dune universe, telling of the lost years of Gurney Halleck as he works with smugglers on Arrakis in a deadly gambit for revenge; inside the ranks of the Sardaukar as the child of a betrayed nobleman becomes one of the Emperor’s most ruthless fighters.

The Futuristic Family Feuding that keeps Feuding! Love it!
Revisado: 12-25-23
Brilliant storytelling pulling back the layers of the centuries old blood feud between Harkonnens and Atreides! Great placement with that story at the end of the collection.
The story of the Shadout Mapes was also well places at the beginning to pull the reader into the collection.
Overall a masterpiece just like the canon!

Southern-accent storytelling at its finest and most triggering. A necessary and painful tale.
Revisado: 12-04-23
An excellent southern version of the Canterbury Tales telling taking the audience on a southern inroad into white supremacy’s power and fragility in the form of racialization laid bare by Jim Crow. The storytelling is both beautiful and striking. The southern accent is perfect

Revisado: 11-12-23
I agree with the other reviews that Wensicia stole the show. Her voice as a character was definitely and nice and refreshing highlight in reading. It underscores how much of a place female characters have in the larger Dune canon. Simply exhilarating! Please keep the character stories coming!

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Storytelling at its finest
Revisado: 07-30-23
I greatly Im enjoyed this story and thought it the perfect length. Because it was slow for me in the beginning, I recommend readers continue on, as all questions will soon be answered. What makes this a great story is that it expanded my understanding of the world and knowledge that humans once held and might encounter again. Additionally, the human relationships in this story are also non-stereotyped and oh so nuanced. Please read.

All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.
