Historia
For the ancients, everything worth pursuing in life flowed from a strong sense of justice—or one’s commitment to doing the right thing, no matter how difficult. In order to be courageous, wise, and self-disciplined, one must begin with justice. The influence of the modern world often tells us that acting justly is optional. Holiday argues that that’s simply untrue—and the fact that so few people today have the strength to stand by their convictions explains much about why we’re so unhappy.

Many Good Principles
Revisado: 08-01-24
It's interesting how a writer, with obvious skill and intelligence is able to high light many of the excellent deeds and intentions of the last 200 plus years while giving a pass to those who destroy monuments; as if there isn't value in monuments you may have disagreement. Many gave of themselves to provide for future generations, a historical prospective and even political view point. If I'm agnostic, is it courageous or insightful of me to deface or otherwise wreck a Catholic or Roman statue? Should I start burning other people's money because it states "In God We Trust?" So it seems the author would have a White Supremacist tried for terrorism but the "woke liberal" who defaces a statue of George Washington might be prosecuted for vandalism. Or to be more on point; how about removing the Robert E. Lee statue or demanding the removal of the Confederate flag? Is there value in the these monuments too. Is there something to be gained by also contemplating the perspectives of other people groups, generations, eras and so on? Does tolerance only go one way? This author would have us believe it's acceptable to venerate those we agree with while condemning those we don't. Frankly, there are more neutral and interesting adventures into American and world history. I can't full heartedly endorse this book. It simply misses the mark like so many attempts at "righting history" do.

Historia
As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

A story of courage, tenacity and brutal reality.
Revisado: 06-16-23
Having little knowledge and appreciation of life in North Korea, this story provided me a good look into the culture and some experiences as well the emotional conflict of those living in a Communist dictatorship. This true story is told a bit dryly but is certainly worth a listen. As a Westerner, it's easy to take for granted the many benefits and conveniences we have but are rarely enjoyed by those living in a communist state. Additionally, the story give insight into the many complications in leaving ones place of birth in pursuit of opportunity and freedom.

Moving Brilliant Beautiful
Revisado: 06-16-23
I enjoy learning history and am particularly intrigued by the WW2 era. This story does a fantastic job of bringing the listener's imagination into focus as to the daily lives of a particular group of Jewish people. But what surprised me was how well this story is told. I was glad when it ended but didn't want it to end. This is a master piece. This story sets the bar very high. It is so good. This is not one to skip over. Put it in your library. You'll be glad you did.

Historia
Tim Kennedy has a problem; he only feels alive right before he’s about to die. Kennedy, a Green Beret, decorated Army sniper, and UFC headliner, has tackled a bull with his bare hands, jumped out of airplanes, dove to the depths of the ocean, and traveled the world hunting poachers, human traffickers, and the Taliban. But he’s also the same man who got kicked out of the police department, fire department, and as an EMT, before getting two women pregnant four days apart, and finally, been beaten up by his Special Forces colleagues.

A really good, simple, straight forward story
Revisado: 06-05-23
If you like modern, uncomplicated war and life stories like me , you'll probably enjoy this as much as I did. Surprisingly, I live in the area he grew up in which only added to my interest. Thank you Tim for your service and continued hard work. I hope I can meet you some day. God bless. p.s. potatoes from In and Out.... that's across the freeway. Impressive. Russ

I hadn't realized this story is based on the exploits of the crime drama, Harry Bosch. The story is told in that same style as the made for television series. I thoroughly enjoyed both.

More than any other sports figure, Vince Lombardi transformed football into a metaphor for the American experience. The nine seasons during which he led the Green Bay Packers to five world championships is the most storied period in NFL history. Lombardi became a legend, a symbol to many of leadership, discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, and to others of an obsession with winning. Maraniss captures the myth and the man, football, God, and country in a thrilling biography that has become an American classic.

It's an amazing account of a man's life. What the story doesn't get into in much detail is the cost of that single minded purposefulness. There is price for greatness. This is certainly a well done book that enjoyed thoroughly.

Revisado: 09-16-22
While Player One capitalizes on the tried and true themes of underdog, the good guy gets the girl and poverty and despair to faim and fortune and goodwill, Player Two tried to morf one of the heroes into a person with questionable motives and even managed to get woke too. I think the charm in Player One is that it didn't try to be too smart by half and relied on traditional values and norms. Think "Sandlot" the movie. Do we really need to be woken by some new societal fad? Does everything have to be about all the self marginalized people wanting to justify there aberrant behavior? Stick with Player One Skip Player Two. Just sayin.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Just excellent from beginning to end. I learned a lot about the movie industry, and it's craziness and pressure, the life of one of it's own young starlets and how she struggled with the pressure and of course the back story of your classic distinctional California family. Well worth the listen.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

From a woman's perspective?
Revisado: 09-10-22
To be honest, I had some difficulty getting into the story initially. But I eventually settled into the story's rhythm. I found myself pulling for the underdog and feeling the rise and fall of my emotions as any truly good story should. Of course I didn't agree with every precept or conclusion but allowed for a degree of tolerance and humility. I especially love the main character for her character. I guess I should have titled this review after her; uncompromising.
