I found this because Hal Elrod had Ruby as a guest on his podcast. When I saw the email for that episode, I knew I wanted to check it out immediately because I was not blind to the fact that males somewhat dominate my self-help library and mentor list. Any good self-help author will keep the message gender-neutral, but I think it is essential to explore outside of your comfort zone and what is familiar.

It didn't take long into this audiobook before I recognized myself feeling triggered. The reason for that is I had just finished another audiobook on leadership that I thoroughly enjoyed. Coincidentally, Ruby calls out that model and takes a stance that this is not that and that she has something unique and more to offer. If this were many years ago and early on in my path of self-development, I may have allowed those triggers to affect me enough to stop listening and put the book down.

However, I remember that another leadership model suggests that you "explore the opposite to be as true or truer than my original story." One other thing I took from those other leadership lessons was that all self-help models have flaws in them. They admitted that their model was not without flaws. So should I just quit listening because Ruby is pointing out some of those flaws?

I'm so happy I didn't give up on this and continued with an open mind. I feel that Ruby is just baring her soul and saying, "F**k it. This is me, and this is what I know to be true." She is not worried about offending as long as she is authentic and a potent leader. If you listen to this with a similar open mind from start to finish, I do not doubt you can be a more potent version of yourself than what you were before you began this journey.

It might sound cliche to say she was so brave in sharing her journey and her rock bottoms. But I felt a deeper connection, and this felt more personal than any of the other self-help books I've consumed.

Everybody can get something from this, but this will likely be my first recommendation for anyone who naturally rejects self-help material. I am overly optimistic, so I am an easy audience for most self-help models and speakers. Ruby finds a way to go beyond that and tap into a different part of us that can help an optimistic person recognize their flaws and not be so condescending. Even self-help leaders can benefit from a little humble pie.

This review would not be complete if I didn't mention how interesting it was when she touched on issues with drugs and alcohol, family judgments, divorce, and plant medicine rituals. So many eye-openers throughout her journey. I love the way she brought it full circle in the end and offered the explanation I needed for why she chose to call out another leadership model I felt connected to. I highly recommend this book to anyone, regardless of your journey in life or your confidence level as a leader.

I got this book recommendation from someone I would have never expected to recommend a book in this category. It came from a successful independent music producer, and he recommended it during a video blog to his mailing list. He talked about some lessons he had learned from this book that he thinks anybody would find beneficial in their life, whether they are in a leadership role or not. I always find it interesting when you get a recommendation from someone in a completely different field than the target market because I'm pretty confident that it came from a purely natural place and a desire to share with others this great discovery.

It just so happens that I am about two years into my first position in a leadership role. My current position is my second promotion in 5 years. And there is much more opportunity and room to grow beyond this role if I choose to. Over the past ten years, I have tackled many self-help and motivational books, audio, video, and podcasts that target anyone willing to self-reflect and better themselves.

This one resonated with me as much as any other. I listen to it weekly, even though I finished it about 5 or 6 weeks ago. I even visited the website recently and was pleased to see all sorts of free supporting docs to help embed these commitments in your brain.

Without spoiling anything, there is an excellent point made that many of those leaving a bad review had to have missed. The author/narrator talks about how this model is not without its flaws because all models are in some way flawed. Life is not about always being right. The sooner you can let go of that fear, desire, or need to be right, the sooner you can be fully present and level up today. Right now. I genuinely believe I am a better person and will provide greater value to others after what I learned in this book.
