Historia
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was.

Good narration, sub-par story
Revisado: 06-22-23
This is one hyped up book that I do not get the hype. It was a fairly lame mystery. Hannah, who is the most boring protagonist I’ve ever read, figured it out within a week. I can’t believe this was made into a mini-series. It’s one saving grace was that it was short.

Really Great (until the end)
Revisado: 06-04-23
Really good family dramedy. Excellent narrator. However, the end felt so out of place and out of nowhere and gave the end of the book a very different tone than the rest.

Absolute Garbage
Revisado: 05-30-23
The narrator was fine and that was the only thing to like about this book.
Something like a dozen people recommended this to me and I have no idea why. This was a DNF for me. I got halfway through and decided to not waste anymore time on something with no redeeming qualities. The characters are awful, the storyline is terrible, the writing is abysmal. It’s so bad. I cannot fathom why anyone I know would read this let alone recommend it to me. It’s complete and utter garbage and I’m shocked it was published. How is this a series?????

Historia
Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous, physical work, and the men take care of the children.

Captivating
Revisado: 03-08-23
This was one of the best books I’ve ever read. It started slow and I thought I was going to give up but I’m so glad I kept going. Historical fiction always leads me to researching the actual places, people and events so in between listening I’ve been reading up on Jeju, the atrocities outlined throughout the book and the haenyeo. I loved following Young Sook and her beautifully moving story.

Interesting, unique, charming
Revisado: 02-21-23
This is not the type of book I normally read. Someone recommended it a while ago and I bought it and am just not listening to it. I spent the majority of the book assuming it was supernatural and that Ursa really was from the stars. The reveal towards the end was a little wonky but ultimately I liked it and the ending. Would recommend.

Revisado: 02-15-23
I would definitely recommend this book, especially on Audible because the narration was amazing. It is rare to come across a unique storyline these days but this got it right. I really liked The Wife Between Us by this duo but hated You are not Alone so I was nervous which way it would go but it was even better than TWBU.

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

Slow start but great play out
Revisado: 01-31-23
Starts slow but worth finishing. Really enjoyed it. Very complex and layered storyline, I almost took notes but eventually got it all figured out and was able to follow. I did not expect that ending at all.

I’ve read a lot of crap lately but I really liked this book. The ending wasn’t my favorite but I liked the rest of the book enough to make that a moot point for me.

Domestic Abuse
Revisado: 01-20-23
Too many books deal with the subject of domestic violence and it’s overdone, rarely original and mentally exhausting. This book was not great and wasn’t worth reading. There was a touch of uniqueness that the husband was just a true psychopath with absolutely no redeeming qualities. I liked Esther and Millie. It would have been better as a short story if it had to be published at all.
