Great, Best in series even, but it should end here
Revisado: 01-27-19
This is my favorite installment so far. The story progressed nicely, and the dialogue is way better. My favorite characters from the first three are Cooper, Julian, and Chaz, and this book gave them a lot of spotlight. This book isn't a five star book however, and I'll tell you why. The Stacey character is a border line Mary Sue, Tim's alcohol dependency seems shoehorned in, the whole thing builds up to a dick joke, and the series does end on this optimum point to end it. I have low expectations for the following books.

Not as good as the first two books, but passable
Revisado: 01-22-19
I listened to the first book, and I loved it so much I got the second one. The second one had it's charm, but the ending was a cliff hanger, so I got this book. The beginning of this book is funny, compelling, and well done. The middle part tapers off a bit, but the book finishes strong. The characters introduced in this book are all good and they fit the story, but there's a forced romance angle that doesn't sit well with me. Jonathan Sleep is still a top tier narrator, but he did one thing I didn't like. He didn't use the same voice for Mordrid as he used in the first book, so I can't give him five stars. As for Bevan, I don't know if I'm used to his clunky dialogue, or he's legitimately getting better, but the dialogue didn't bug me as much as it did in the first two books. Ultimately I recommend this book, but it does get a little murky.

It's an omnibus
Revisado: 01-20-19
This is the first review I've made without having finished the book, but being 35 hours and 5 minutes, and having listened to about 10 hours so far, I'm entitled to review this. Howard wrote a lot of Conan Stories for weird tales, so not all of them are going to be great. I understand that, but the Kull story and the Solomon Kane stories that are at the beginning of the omnibus aren't good. The essay Howard wrote to explain the world is awesome though. Once you get to the Conan Stories though they are awesome, or at least the first ones are. The one I'm on now is called the slithering shadow, and it doesn't suck me into the story that well. Now for my thoughts on the narrator, he's. not. that. good. his voice makes me want to fall asleep. I sought these out as a fan of the Conan movies with Arnold in them, and the best thing the narrator did is make Conan sound like Arnold. It's an omnibus you're going to get some stuff in it that you don't like, but there is good stuff in it as well.

Still top quality
Revisado: 01-20-19
So not too long ago i finished the first installment in this series, and I greatly enjoyed it so I decided to let it roll. I wasn't disappointed, but something about this book nagged me a little, it moved so fast. The dialogue is still choppy a bit, but the jokes are also still funny. The ending isn't the ending I would have gone with, but nobody pays money to listen to someone read my books, and it was still serviceable so who am I to judge. Ultimately the first one is way better, but this one is still good.

Tim and his friends find out the hard way that you shouldn't question the game master, and you shouldn't make fun of his cape. One minute, they're drinking away the dreariness of their lives, escaping into a fantasy game and laughing their asses off. The next minute, they're in a horse-drawn cart surrounded by soldiers pointing crossbows at them.

A little raw but ultimately good
Revisado: 01-17-19
This series had been staring at me for a long time, so decided to give it a shot. The beginning is very tedious, the narrator doesn't do that great of a job distinguishing a lot of the characters, but once the story crosses over into the fantasy realm the narrator hits his stride. He honestly becomes a selling a point for the book. Now the writing is very raw, dialogue between characters doesn't have much fluidity to it. It's almost as if it were intended to be a movie or tv show, and just ended up being a novel. The characters however are very fleshed out, you can relate to them, you just get it. Humor is a big component of this story, and that is done well. It's mainly lewd humor, but it's done well enough through dialogue and description that it fits nicely. I'm on the hook for the next sequel, and from where I'm standing there's nowhere to go but up.

I would do it differently
Revisado: 01-13-19
William Turbett makes Drew Cordell’s work sound like $1,000,000. I personally thought the book was good, but there are things about it that are weak. I love the beginning, and I love the aspect of that it’s a competition to see who can beat the game the fastest, and a lot of the NPC characters are super cool and funny. Two of the four main characters aren’t totally fleshed out, John and Kirsten, so it’s kind of hard to grow attached to them. I had trouble understanding how the antagonist Jason got into the competition and how he was sort of just in a random team. there does seem to be long term plot threads being sewn in, so I’m happy to give them a chance before critiquing them, but if their not sewn in well this book will be worse. What gets me though is the twist that makes the company evil, it’s not that bad to me, I won’t spoil it because it’s important to the story, but it’s honestly not that nefarious. Ultimately I will listen to the second one, and i greatly enjoyed this one.

The Snail on the Slope takes place in two distinct worlds. One is the Administration, an institution run by a surreal, Kafkaesque bureaucracy whose aim is to govern the forest below. The other is the Forest, a place of fear, weird creatures, primitive people, and violence. Peretz, who works at the Administration, wants to visit the Forest. Candide crashed in the Forest years ago and wants to return to the Administration. Their journeys are surprising and strange, and listeners are left to puzzle out the mysteries of these foreign environments.

What insanity must feel like
Revisado: 01-10-19
I had recently finished the Dead Mountaineer's Inn and thought the Strugatsky brothers were a safe bet for a good read that would keep me interested so after perusing their available books I decided to go with, The Snail on the Slope. The beginning of the book is awesome. It's got the humor they like to sprinkle into their work, and the narrator's performance does a great job of doing justice to the characters. However once I got past a certain point I couldn't understand what was going on at all, and I was paying the utmost attention to the book, I finished because I felt the middle portion turning my brain to mush was the brothers challenging me. The afterword from Boris Strugatsky does explain the point to the madness though, which saves the book, but ultimately I can't give The Snail on the Slope any more than 3 stars.

Good humorous light hearted Science Fiction
Revisado: 01-06-19
Drew Cordell had my money with this one when I read the description. A toy company wants to bring down galactic Santa? It was so appealing. The narrator did a great job of sucking you into the story, the characters were interesting as well, but I honestly feel the story could have had a bit more length. The only complaint I have about the story, other than length, is that it could have benefited greatly from some more action scenes. I understand a feel good ending is what you were going for, but I'd expect an evil toy manufacturer to be a little more violent.

Amazingly well written.
Revisado: 01-06-19
I'm not really into mysteries, but from the earlier descriptions it was considered a humorous take on the detective genre. The humor is really applied nicely, it doesn't get whacky, which is a problem I've encountered when humor is applied into generally non humorous genres. Honestly I couldn't stop listening. It made driving for my job so much more fun.
