Anyone who has grown up in one of the Great Lakes states will find this a nostalgic listen. "Free Range" looks back on the author's memories of his boyhood adventures in the woods, on the lakes, and the back roads, told in true male fashion (every car, boat, or motorcycle identified by specific year, make, and model). Tall tales are told with a rich vocabulary that's nevertheless easy to follow. To me it was reminiscent of the late Paul Harvey (Think "The Rest of the Story."), and Mr. Hutchins' voice is perfect for the elderly man reminiscing about his younger days.
If you're looking for R-rated entertainment, you might look elsewhere. But if you want to go back in time to a more innocent age and hear adventures of kids unplugged and "free range," you'll enjoy this listen. It might jog a few of your own memories, as well.

This is a story with pathos, romance, suspense, and intrigue. The reader feels everything from rage to pity, to admiration, to sentimental tears. The world these characters lived in was so different from ours, and yet one that could be ours if we don't have the courage to stand up to evil.
The narrator has an impressive repertoire of believable (but understandable) dialects and accents for the characters of various nationalities and ethnic groups. They add color to the story.

As usual, Liane Moriarty weaves an intricate story with complex characters, relationships, and mysteries. Revelations unfold gradually toward the end and pick up momentum, until the last few minutes hit like an avalanche. Loved it!

"The Next Thing You Know" is a powerful, poignant story that reminds us that we don't know everything. The excruciating mystery of what really happened hangs in the air until the revelation in the final flashback from the point of view of the deceased in his last moments. The ending is both positive and heartbreaking. (And yes, I cried.)

A Story of "Blind love"

"Before I Saw You" tells a story about love truly conquering all - a couple "so near and yet so far" and how they fall in love without ever seeing each other's faces. I loved the characters. The couple, the nurses, the "bff," the man's mom, were each delightful in their own way. No one is flawless, and one weakness at a moment of testing threatens to end the relationship. Forgiveness takes time. This episode is realistic enough that the reader can experience the anguish of guilt along with the character.
The narrators were excellent, giving each character a voice and a dialect. Five stars!

Rachel Gilson puts the confusing issue of same-sex attraction (SSA) into perspective for Christians who want to help people struggling with this temptation. Gilson is both compassionate and realistic as she gently corrects the Church's false expectations and helps believers to see that SSA is similar to other forms of temptation in that it often never stops being a struggle until we're in glory. She also makes the reader aware of how "costly" a commitment to Christ is for those leaving the LBGT lifestyle, and that for someone sacrificing nearly everything for Christ, an hour a week in church does not come close to meeting the need for fellowship and support. The Church is also gently chastised for often making marriage an idol of sorts, and enlightened (or reminded) about the unique roles of singles as equally valuable in the Body of Christ. I wish everyone who identifies as a Christ-follower could read this book.

I love Liane Moriarty's style, the way she tells the story from the perspective of each character to give the reader the whole story. As usual, little twists and turns kept me listening right to the last of the credits.
