Really good!

Which is rather disappointing for Crouch. His books are usually mind-bendingly epic, they usually make me question life, and they always make me a little bit worried about what's going on in the world without us ever knowing. Except for this one. It was just standard good. Average good. Merely entertaining.

I decided to read this based on just the title. I had no idea it was intended to be satire.

It’s both hilarious and depressing. Everything hit way too close to home.

There was something about this book that I didn't quite like. I'm not sure if it's because this book is covering a complex topic, or if it's because I just didn't care for the way the information was laid out. I usually like books of this nature to provide a high level overview of the topic followed by details for each component. I didn't really feel like I got that here.

Aside from that, though, this book was great. The topic covers so many aspects of life that I'd expect everyone to take something different away from the book. My take away was that when failures occur, you should look at the system that created that error. That is, you should look at the big picture, see how all of the elements are connected, and identify the root cause of a problem in order to fix it long-term. We shouldn't look for individual people to blame, and we shouldn't even look at individual elements if we want a long-term fix.

While I'm tempted to expand on this, the book does a much better job explaining it all. I highly recommend it.

The audiobook's narration was smooth and consistent. I was able to comfortably listen to it at 2.5x speed and catch every word.

Whether you're new to cognitive biases or you've already read a bunch of books on this topic, this book is worth a read. It's a short and to the point book about various biases everyone has, quick examples of each bias, and actions we can take to avoid said biases. It can work as a solid introduction into the field or a reminder of biases we should be trying to avoid. It wasn't my first book on the topic, but I learned about a couple of new biases I had not heard about before.

It's a content-dense book. Even though I usually listen to audiobooks at 3.0x speed, I slowed this one down to 2.0x to get everything out of it. The narration was even and sounded great at the increased listening speed (which doesn't always happen).

First read:
Really good book, but I didn't realize it was a part of a series until it abruptly ended. I thought I completely missed the point until I found out there was a sequel. I... think there's more to this book that I didn't get. There were a lot of fascinating elements that didn't get explored as much as I would have hoped.

Second read:
Wow. I picked up on so much more this time around. This is one of those rare books that clearly needs to be read a second time but is still interesting the first time around.

A more accurate name for this book would have been, “Some of my habits, and I think I’m a pretty effective person.”

If you ever talk to an expert about something or read something by one, you hear (or read) their passion on the topic, their knowledge spanning the field of the topic, stories of how others found out about this unexpected thing or that surprising find, and relevant examples from within their own life that don’t inject too much of themselves into the narrative.

If you ever talk to a person who loves to hear their own voice and pretends to know everything, you get a lot of tidbits of info that make sense followed by an unfiltered stream of consciousness as they wing it from the gut.

If you’re wanting a data-driven book, this one isn’t for you. If you like confident sounding people and extrapolating conclusions, you may want to consider this book.

It had some good parts and some not so good parts. In the not so good parts, it didn't quite feel like an Honor Harrington book. I started feeling that way in the previous book and more so in this book. I wonder if too much time has passed since the early books for the series to have kept a perfectly consistent tone, and it makes me less hopeful for the upcoming book.

The ending also felt abrupt. This probably would have been a four star book for me, but that ending kicked it to a three. I might not have been as bothered by the ending if the next book was available to read; I'm not sure.

♫ It's been a long road, ♫
♫ to get from there to here. ♫
♫ it's been a long time, ♫
♫ but my time is finally here. ♫

If you loved the Honor Harrington books and loved Star Trek but didn't care for Star Trek Enterprise because you didn't think they went far back enough, then this book might be for you. That's not exactly what happens in the story, but that's the feel of the book.

I imagine the pitch for the book went something like this:

Imagine another Honor Harrington book, but this time..... IN SPACE!
But it's already in space.
Right... okay, this time.... ON THE SEA!
How does that work?
We'll do some time stuff to make it work.
Cool. How else will it compare to the Honor Harrington books?
Instead of a female lead, we'll do (spoiler).
Cool.
Long or short book.... we'll do a long book.
Cool.
Political or lots of battles.... we'll do super political.
Cool.
Underdog or underdog... we'll do underdog.
Unexpected!
I know, right.
Will there be tree cats?
No.
Will there be any romantic relationship building?
No.
Will there be any relationships formed at all?
I'll throw a shallow one in, I guess.
Cool! I'm sold.

Waste of time. First story is just the first few chapters of A Beautiful Friendship. Second story was boring AF. Third story was actually mildly interesting. Last section was a bunch of dry data that I thought was pretty interesting and is why this book gets two stars instead of one star. I highly recommend skipping this one.

It has some invaluable nuggets of information, but it's extremely verbose for the content it provides despite its short size. It somehow manages to fit into the categories of "must-read", "need to review again", and "never want to read again" for me all at the same time.
