D.D. VanDyke has created an appealing first-person narrator expertly performed by the narrator. Actually, the story feels real because of the all the characters and how they're performed, more than the plot. A fun way to spend an hour on the road but probably not worth spending a credit on. Although, there is that narration, LOL. Can't get enough of this narrator reading Cal's thought process but would have liked a longer and more complicated plot. I'm getting ready to listen to the next novel in the series and hoping that it's got more satisfying storyline.

Story isn't what makes this a great audiobook, it's the characters and San Francisco's seedier nightlife setting. A savvy, sexy first-person female PI who gambles, loves cars , has daddy issues and keeps a shotgun in the trunk of her car? I want to meet this babe! Terrific, throaty narration, very well recorded, lots of fun characters from seedy to lowlife to a self-styled prince charming Aryan Brotherhood drug lord creep. Needs to be longer, which might also fix the unfinished feel of the story complained about in some reviews. Overall, a solid B/B+ effort. I'd probably spend a credit on another if there were more in the series, just to hear Cal pillow talk about her car some more, LOL.

This author has a command of language and isn't afraid to use it. Powerful, ghostly imagery. While all of the stories are unsettling to varying degrees, and there is some gore and horror (and even one humorous story), there's more of a sadness to each than a jump out of your boots scare. The narration was stellar. Francesca Townes treats us to a mini-novel approach to each story, giving a lot of bang for your audiobook buck. She's excellent at first-person male characters and even her conversations between multiple male characters worked. I took one star off on Story, because to be honest, I was expecting more thrills and chills, but I might come back and change that to a full five for the excellent writing.

This was an interesting way to get some info on buying an exotic pet bird. I listened in my car last night on a long drive and actually learned a lot that I didn't already know. I thought it might be difficult as audio but it's laid out well and the narrator is easy to understand, reads at a good pace and very "listenable" so I didn't get bored or annoyed. I gave it only 4 stars for "story" since it's not a story kind of book, just facts and author's experienced opinion.

Kind of a crap book but reasonably entertaining for a short road trip. The bit at the end about Thug Behram was unexpected and therefore interesting. I wasn't interested in the preface about the author at the beginning.

These serial killer junk books are almost always narrated by men trying hard to imitate the guy who does all the movie trailers. So, it was refreshing to hear a female voice in what was otherwise familiar territory about famous serial killers. Classed it up a little and kept my interest. Can't figure out why the "performance" has gotten lowest ratings, since it's the best thing in the book.
