Historia
England, 1881. Hereford Cathedral stands sentinel over the city, keeping its secrets, holding long forgotten souls in its stony embrace. Hecate Cavendish speeds through the cobbled streets on her bicycle, skirts hitched daringly high, heading for her new life as Assistant Librarian. But this is no ordinary collection of books. The cathedral houses an ancient chained library, wisdom guarded for centuries, mysteries and stories locked onto its worn, humble shelves. The most prized artifact, however, is the medieval world map which hangs next to Hecate’s desk.

Original and engaging story line. The narration was perfect. My only concern is that I questioned whether the raven “called” or “cawed”. Ravens don’t “caw”, they croak.

This “stand by your man” and letting mom stomp all over your boundaries stuff is toxic, especially in this age when we know better. Eww. Also, the ending is not an ending.

As a young bride, Susannah Page was rumored to be a Civil War spy for the North, a traitor to her Virginian roots. Her great-granddaughter Adelaide, the current matriarch of Holly Oak, doesn’t believe that Susannah’s ghost haunts the antebellum mansion looking for a pardon, but rather the house itself bears a grudge toward its tragic past.

Not as compelling as author’s other books
Revisado: 06-21-23
There were some interesting parts, but nothing like the author’s other books, which are very good. Personally, I got very frustrated that the new wife was such a pushover and seemed to let others direct her course after getting married. She didn’t seem to learn much about herself or have any personal revelations. Also, I thought it was odd that Suzanna showed up in the South with a full blown Southern drawl even though she grew up in Maine.

Historia
In 1935, six-year-old Emily Evans vanishes from her family's vacation home on a remote Minnesota lake. Her disappearance destroys the family - her father commits suicide, and her mother and two older sisters spend the rest of their lives at the lake house, keeping a decades-long vigil for the lost child. Sixty years later, Lucy, the quiet and watchful middle sister, lives in the lake house alone. Before her death, she writes the story of that devastating summer in a notebook that she leaves, along with the house, to the only person who might care: her grandniece, Justine.

Very good story. Narration not great but not terrible.
Revisado: 01-21-23
There were plenty of twists in the story and at times I wanted to yell at the main character for her wrong thinking, but it was an accurate portrayal of someone who had always lived in a toxic environment. One narrator was flat most of the time, but it might have been a character choice. The second narrator really did read like an old lady at story hour. Again, I suppose that’s appropriate, but it didn’t add anything to the experience.

The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything.

This is the second book that I have read about the Kentucky pack horse library and I was pleased with the way it was unique enough to be entertaining but realistic enough to be believable. I was deeply engaged with the development of the story and invested in the characters.
