There is good information in here, yes, but most of it is fairly common knowledge. It should have been so much shorter. It digresses into personal commentary and tangents far too often. He' written, what ... 23 books? I see how that could happen.

I got a few chapters in, waiting for the beef.

But this is a very personal account, far from what I expected: a scientific, neurological, sociological, psychological analysis of friendship. This is not that, sorry to say.

There's a lot to take in, but its nicely organized and I did feel.taht there is hope .. for a more meaningful, fulfilling, connected, satisfying life. I am likely to buy this in book form and read it more carefully still.

This succinct and organized summary of what we knew (in 2019) has just a few chapters that simply describe unusual animals. It focus mainly on how they got that way. It's a.great review if you already know the "basics" and is likely to offer food for thought.for professionals in the field.

The lecturer uses "uptalk" which, if you're familiar with it? you might like? but I find it annoying.

That is easy to get used to, though, and I highly recommend this course.

Updates a Practical Life Philosophy

I consider rhis a masterful explanation of Modern Stoicism, which is very different from lower case stoicism and also from Traditional Stoiciam which incorporated -- some say relied on-- belief in providence,, god , a purpose or plan to nature. Irvine explains how the key tenants of this philosophy can thrive in a world' view that recognizes evolution, in modern social structures. He is clear about this shift, what it sacrifices and preserves, and how the philosophy might even extend a bit to become even more practical today for those pursuing goodness and seeking tranquility.

I've listened through several times, bought and read the book, and after reading many others as well ai recommend this first for anyone curious about this powerful life path. He is clear, organized, and concise and the narration is great. It's a personal favorite.

Great if you can bear the narration

I listened to this through for the jarring history it portrays. Then I bought the book, I liked it so much.

But from the first chapter I found the narration cringeworthy as every quote is delivered in a fake voice. He attempt to mimick everyone, with a lilting voice for women, a mocking voice for many, and a strong voice for those he apparently approves of. We don't need to know what the narrator thinks of these people!

Nearly ruined a good thing. The book itself is excellent, I must say. It's a grim portrayal of American history, and a compelling one too.

Recommend! ... the printed book, that is.

I've read some other books on the topic, this is among the best. I like how the author takes a theme, explains it stoic source and Conte t of the time, then shares more recent insights by others, and even shares criticisms. I listened to audio and then bought the book. This is one to read again.

The audio version is well read 👌

Very nicely done. He makes a strong argument for starting a meditation practice. Why, how, when, and to what end. Have done in the past, rings true, will start again.

Written just prior to Covid 19, this is a startling book -- along with several others -- warning us of low frequency high probability pandemics which market forces won't, so can't, prevent or prepare for.

The author gives great detail on a variety of such threats,l. I just hope we can act on sound advice like this. At least having eyes open may be valuable next time ... this book can help with that.

Good analysis clearly from an expert.. severe. Much cotent is repeated, oddly including whole a sections cut and pasted. Focused on more severe cases. Would be invaluable for a parent. I've often thought 1. we're all on the spectrum, and 2. aspbergers is not all bad. This book supports #2, but this book is ņot so nuanced for mild cases.
